IES v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Copdock Eagles U11 on Mon 03 Jul 2017 at 6pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 12 runs

Match report A keenly contested match on a lovely Summer’s evening at Chantry Park, with the Eagles eventually running out as the victors, with hopefully some valuable lessons learnt for the future by both teams.

Captain Conner won the toss and elected to bowl first (usually the right decision with only one new ball per match).

The IES top four batsmen started off at a great scoring rate, hitting the boundary seven times in the first six overs in which they scored 52 runs, before being pegged back by a brace of wickets from Isaac (who took three wickets overall) in the seventh over, after which they scored only 28 off the next six overs and a turgid 17 off the final six. This massive slow-down was mainly due to the very economical slower bowling from the trio of Rozario, Finlay and Will, backed up by some sharp fielding, with an average of just 2 runs an over being scored in overs 9 through 15.

Overall, the Copdock bowling was good, helped by a dead patch in the pitch on the off side, but as ever, with 27% of runs coming from wides and no-balls, we need to continue working on that consistency.

Behind the stumps, Captain Conner put in a steady performance (no byes), but should have more confidence in himself (and his teammates), by standing closer for the quicker bowlers, so he is taking the ball on the full (rather than on the bounce or around his ankles) and standing up to the stumps for the slower bowlers.

Fielding was fairly sharp (perhaps a bit too sharp by Isaac who received a direct blow on the kneecap whilst executing a textbook long barrier - ouch!!), with good backing up and no overthrows (the dreaded 5 runs). Our single run-out came when the unfortunate George leaped out of his crease to avoid the incoming ball (I guess he won’t be doing that again any time soon).

At the half-way point, the final IES total of 97 for 6 looked to be easily within our reach.

However, the Super Eights format is certainly a match of two halves and Copdock made a fairly slow start with only 7 runs off the first three overs, before slowly accelerating through the innings towards a massive 28 off the final three overs, when the IES scoring rate was finally exceeded.

Will played the opener role well, with some classic defensive and scoring shots (two fours), being our only batsman to retire not out, but in future should look to accelerate more towards the end of his innings, especially with a softer ball when batting second.

Brothers Conner and Jimmy (who both got two bites at the cherry thanks to the Super Eights format), together with Monty, who played the slower bowlers excellently by using his feet and getting to the pitch of the ball, before falling to a tame double bouncer (see Law 24.7), all scored at well over a run a ball, scoring 12 fours between them.

Needing six to win off the final over, the Holdcroft brothers calmly set about it, each scoring a boundary and looking to exploit any weakness in the field, scoring a total of 17, and giving us a winning margin somewhat larger than it felt at the time.

Overall, running was very committed and positive (perhaps too positive on occasion!), facing some equally committed fielding, with the IES keeper putting in a great performance, standing up throughout, taking a great stumping and being instrumental in at three of the four (yes four!) Copdock run-outs.

With three league matches left (including the long-awaited rematch against the Copdock Hawks, the Eagles only defeat so far), let’s hope the boys continue to learn from match experience (let’s remember that matches are about learning from the opposition as well) and can run out as league winners at the end of the season.

Thanks again to parents for their ongoing support (although I will continue to instruct the boys to ignore any run calls coming from the crowd, especially if it’s your dad!), with special mention to Nigel Woods for volunteering to score (again!: maybe he’ll get to actually watch a match one day, if someone else volunteers).
