Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Ipswich & East Suffolk on Sat 29 Jul 2017 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned

Match report An overcast day greeted the Twosaders as they prepared for life without Ironfist with IES making the short trip up the old A12. With the weather closing in new captain East agreed an early start with counterpart Mildenhall and a shortened 40 overs per side match. Mildenhall duly won the toss and Flopdock were inserted. The match began (with JP still making his way back from Stoke) with Sharpe and a green looking Gravell opening up. For once it didn't appear to be a late night effecting the Gravell gills but something less suspect. Soon both openers were in the groove, tucking into some inviting deliveries from both IES opening bowlers. Sharpe looked particularly keen to put his foot down after lasts weeks solid start almost came back to bite the side. As they often do both Gravell and Sharpe mixed the sublime with the ridiculous until eventually Gravell's luck ran out and he holed out for 19. As Gravell collapsed in a heap by the side of the pitch, still fully padded up, Percy pushed the rate along further and after 11 overs Flopdock were well placed at 79 for 1. There may have been a regime change but somethings will always remain constant - cue Copdock Collapse. First a reckless Reuben waft, then a timid Tim poke before Nose and Jacob found themselves at the same end and Jacob fell on his sword. Senior stalwart East then chipped tamely to square leg before Thomas played round a straight one. Before you knew it 79 for 1 had become 116 for 6 with 29 overs now gone. As young uns M-M-Mlambo and Harry weren't aware that they were supposed to needlessly throw it away and instead rebuilt sensibly and brought the innings back to an even keel. Eventually the message to swing with gay abandon reached the middle and Harry skied to mid-off. Jenko and Donald took the score past 175 before both fell in quick succession as time was running out. In the final over East JR was dismissed for 1 and Flopdock had been bowled out for 185.

Talk over a hotly contested tea was that the score was competitive but below par, we'd need to be at our best to ensure victory. However those who were worried had forgotten about Harry Bailey returning to the side to take the new ball. Harry bowled like the wind. Soon he had Debenham gloving a rising ball off his nose through to Thomas. Such was the spite in his delivery that Nose and Jenko were worried about the next mornings breakfast. Khalid was soon also trudging back having gloved one aswell. His decision not to walk had Percy reminding him of the route back to the hutch. As the older IES players slid down the order Nose was able to pick up a couple of wickets too and Jason had the fifth wicket pouched at slip. He could also have had a second next ball but unfortunately Nose was pointing out how long it was all taking as the rain began to fall rather than fielding and the ball ballooned over his head at fine leg prompting the umpires to call a halt to proceedings.

Ultimately the weather robbed us but some decent performances.

Sombrero - Harry, good rebuilding with the bat, fearsome spell with the ball

SC Strawberry - Nose. Great escape from Reuben.
