Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v East Bergholt on Sat 22 Jul 2017 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 6 runs

Match report Four and a half years, 101 games, sixty wins. On Saturday, Ironfist hung up his armband after one of the most successful runs of captaincy the club has ever seen. From Division Four relegation fodder, to pushing for promotion to Division One, Graham Underwood decided to step down from the captaincy on Saturday. From everyone within the side and the club, thank you Graham, you have done a wonderful job.

Now we have done the soppy emotional stuff, stand in Captain Thomas led a side missing both East’s for the first time in living memory. The umpires at the toss noted what a nice day it would be without them, how right they were.

A Hollis wondergoal for a very youthful looking old’uns won the warm up walking football and Fergus “Fattykins” Atkins led the stretches as Thomas strode out to toss up on a worn deck. Thomas skilfully flipped a tail and decided to have a bat knowing it could be difficult later on. The twosaders got off to a solid start and lost the first wicket for 94, Sharpe the dismissed man. The middle overs against the Philpott lobs and the spin of Oakley were a challenge to the younger batters. Marston and Atkins faced challenges to rotate the strike, but did find the boundary regularly. FAtkins went on to make a skilled 75* and he and Hollis took the total up to a commanding 237-5, with some lusty blows from the sweet Chillean sensation.

Tea came and went and as the Galacticos went out to field chatter was about bowling with discipline and building pressure. Unfortunately, the Copdock seamers were a little off the mark and Easy Bergholt got off to a roaring start. The rain and the real housewives favourite Tom Jenkin dragged the run rate back, Jenkin has been in blistering form with the ball in the last few weeks and after a first over of long hops, delivered again. MLAMBO, got Copdock the first breakthrough with a half tracker that was somehow nicked behind, it clearly gave him further confidence to persist with the length erroneously.

It was the introduction of man of the moment FAtkins who came on at the Pavilion end and proved a handy foil to Jenkin getting the ball to spit and bounce with gusto. Jenkin removed the set opener after the spin attack built some pressure and from then on Copdock began to slowly regain control of the game. FAtkins and Jenkin combined to take five wickets between them, ripping through the middle order. Delicately poised, Jenkin prized out the key wicket of Foster who needing 4.5 an over had the game within reach. He changed to round the wicket and slid a ball between the bat and pad as Foster advanced and looked to attack.

Jason Pembroke came back at the Best Western end, bowling economically and picking up three wickets to move the game towards Copdock. 13 to win off the last over for Bergholt with two wickets left, JP managed to bowl the first four balls for just four runs. The fifth, was in the slot outside off and the Bergholt batter gave it an almighty swing towards long off. Jenkin was steadying himself under it, but it looked six all the way. With utmost nonchalance and almost a hint of arrogance, Jenkin snaffled a wonderful catch above his head, just a matter of inches inside the boundary rope to seal the game for the mighty Twosaders.

A resurgent IES at home next week, with both Easts and Gravell available. What a time to be alive.
