East Bergholt v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 06 May 2017 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report After a capitulation against Coggy the Twosaders travelled the short trip down the A12 to East Bergholt looking to put the previous weeks spanking behind them. Thomas and Gravell were called up to the Big Leagues and Sharpe still mentally scarred from last weeks drubbing was unavailable. Thankfully Ironfist was unavailable and East JR (younger, more attractive, more wickets) took the opportunity to blood two new faces, Jack Knight and the returning Percival.

Having won an early toss East decided to field and dispensed with the warm up in order to begin the game as early as possible. Despite the rumour going round this have nothing to do with 'winning' the SC Strawberry the previous week. A usual East Bergholt pitch, slow and low looking and usual Bergholt outfield, uneven with some longer grass given the recent football awaited Copdocks bowlers. Also one pretty short boundary. Nose and Jason took the new ball, JP drawing the short straw and bowling into a hefty breeze. Jason threatened the pretty short boundary in his first over which lasted 12 balls with some lavish swing. Soon the radar was fine tuned and both Nose and Jason were difficult to get away though the outfield meant fielding conditions were tricky. Nose made a breakthrough but East Bergholt continued, all be it at a sedate pace through the opening exchanges, reaching 40 for 1 off 14 overs.

The introduction of spin twins East JR and Jenko saw the rate dry up further and soon the wickets were tumbling as well with Smythe eding Jenkin to slip and Gedney being deceived by a rare Jenkin turner. As East joined in on the act East Bergholt we in real trouble at 80 for 6 off 35 overs with only Oakley offering resistance. Things could have been even worse had Jenkin not spilt a regulation chance of Philpotts or the umpire seen an inside each early in his innings. When the returning JP broke the brief cameo wickets soon followed with Oakley eventually falling for a Storey like half century. A missed stumping off the final ball by the otherwise impressive Knight meant East Bergholt finished only 9 down but at tea Flopdock could be pleased with the first half of the job. Indeed between his third and fourth plates of tea Cuff was heard to remark that 'we must be favourites from here bah'.

A new look opening pair started off for Flopdock in the different shapes of Sexton and Jenkin. After early lives thanks to some sloppy slip catching both appeared to be building nicely until the wily Philpott lured Sexy out of his ground and snuck one through his defences. After the ball cannoned into off stump the bail eventually toppled forward and Sexy departed to be replaced by Kaarl 'The Wall' Storey. Jenko and The Wall mixed watchful defence with the odd boundary, always ensuring that they kept up with the rate and at drinks Flopdock were well placed at 68 for 1. Jenko fell soon after drinks to a decent Yorker leading to Dave Hale's bunny Tim Percival batting for Copdock for the first time in nearly 15 years. Percy was soon back in the swing of things dispatching Philpott for 6 second ball. The rate increased as Percival pushed the accelerator, and by the time he fell for an enterprising 31 the game was as good as over. There was still time for Nose to run himself out but Flopdock got home with nearly 10 overs to spare with Kaarl collecting yet another red-inker.

An excellent all round performance, banishing the memories of a poor effort the week before.

SC Strawberry - Jenko, poor drop, comical fluff at backward square leg.

Sachin Sombrero - Jenko "runs, wickets"
