Match report Cardinals v Mildenhall CC U15s – Thursday 19 May 2016 Mildenhall (108 - 5) beat Cardinals (91 for 6) by 17 runs

The Cardinals played host to Mildenhall in what promised to be the U15 Squad’s toughest match of the season so far. It was a dry, bright evening at the Copdock Oval, with the U13s’ development team playing on the adjacent pitch. Skipper Ollie Stace lost the toss and Mildenhall opted to bat. Stace and Finn O’Reilly opened the bowling.

Unfortunately, Cardinals dropped catches in both the first two overs and at the end of the 2 nd the score was 9 without loss. Stace’s 2 nd over was a maiden, and at the end of the 5 th Mildenhall were on 17 – 0. Dillon Hatcher came on to bowl the 7 th , there was another dropped catch off his first ball, and Will Seitam bowled the 8 th, , in which there was a wicket caught Stace at mid-off. The score was 33 for 1 at the end of that over. Seitam picked up another wicket, clean bowled, in the 10 th , and at the halfway point the score was 47 for 2. Ollie Mexome came on to bowl the 11 th , taking a wicket, also caught by Stace at mid-off. The score was 51 for 3 at the end of the over. Seitam took another wicket with his last ball of the next over, caught by Tom Jermy, and the score was 55 for 4 at the end of the 12 th . At the end of the 14 th , Mildenhall’s score was 63 for 4 and Seitam, the pick of our bowlers, finished with figures of 3 wickets for 8 runs off his 4 overs. At the end of the 15 th , the score was 69. Hatcher came back for the 16 th , and Mexome for the 17 th , by the end of which the score had moved on to 88 for 4. Jermy came on to bowl the 18 th , taking a wicket with a fine catch by Finn Morrison, and the score was 93 at the end of the over. O’Reilly came back for the 19 th , Stace bowled the last, and Mildenhall finished on 108 for 5, which represented a gettable target on a good wicket.

Dan Leggett and Harry Reddington opened the batting for the Cardinals. They started steadily. In the 5 th , Leggett was caught behind for 10 with the score on 14. George Offord was next man in and Reddington was out caught in the next over, to be replaced by Jermy. At the end of the 6 th , Cardinals were 14 for 2 and by the end of the 10 th it was 41 for 2. Offord was out caught at the end of the 11 th and Stace was next in with the score on 42 for 3. The 50 did not come up until the end of the 12 th . Jermy was then run out at the start of the next and was replaced by Mexome. Stace was out for 18 in the 18 th with score on 79 and Seitam was next in. Mexome was out for 7 in the 19 th . The Cardinals finished on 91, a loss by 17 runs.

Unfortunately, the boys slipped behind the required run rate and were never able to recover. An evening of dropped catches, overthrows, misfields, and other unforced errors, coupled with a mistimed run-chase left the squad with a strong feeling of what might have been.
