Mistley II v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 07 May 2016 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 7 runs
Match report
The Two Counties Win Bus rolled into Mistley this week full of confidence after 2 victories and keen to make Len Gunderwood spend the embezzled match fees on the promised Trongs rather than his usual holiday. A bright sunny day and a picturesque setting greeted us as well as a well run Thomas warm up. Mistley often brings back good memories including 'that run out' between East (older) and Percival (younger) in addition to Sharpe's catastrophic goalkeeping and 'that 23 ball over'. Today also saw something that we will all look back on and say 'I was there' as, after 42 consecutive failures, Ironfist finally won the toss. Perhaps surprisingly on a pitch with a green tinge he opted to bat first.
In the absence of Gravell and Dan Leggett's call up to the thirds Ironfist drafted in Reg Hollis and Ashwin Bhatt. Captain's favourite, the fit looking Adam Hopkins, replaced Gravell at the top of the order to partner Sharpe. The two made steady progress in the opening overs and helped by some poor catching advanced the score past 50. Eventually Reubs fell at the fifth time of asking for 34 and Nose joined Hoppy. These two took the score to 117 before both fell in quick succession, Hoppy for a well made 50 and Nose again falling to the wily old pro, this time for 30. Inevitably Thomas came and went quickly as Goff picked up his bunny for 9 and it was left to Karl 'Multi' Storey and the returning Reg Hollis to get Flopdock up to a good total. Once in Kaaarl crashed some powerful boundaries through mid off and pulled well behind square whilst Reg timed it elegantly into the leg side or caressed through the covers. At tea Flopdock had got to 208 for 4 off 45 and over an excellent spread (including a cheese board) talk was of the total being an imposing one.
Things started off well enough in the field, A rusty looking Bhatt picked up a Stuck LBW and Nose a fortunate bowled off the pads when the ball looked to be scooting past Scott for four byes. Things went down hill from here. Some scruffy bowling and some poor fielding followed. East (Junior/More Attractive) dropped two, Reubs three, Wooton many, Ironfist shelled a clanger and things started to look bleak. Mistley opener Branscombe was having no such difficulties - quietly gliding past 50. As Wooton and East finally held on to edges off Jenkin, Branscombe began to realise he might have to do it all himself and upped the tempo and smashing Jenkin for maximums and popping East into the graveyard. Missed chances helped him on his way but in short order the game seemed to have slipped away with only 42 needed off the last 8 overs and 3 wickets left. Ironfist turned to the Chuckle Brothers, East and Nose to try to stem the flow. Thankfully East Junior was able to winkle a few more wickets out and come up with a few quiet overs meaning with 2 overs to go 19 runs were still needed with two wickets left. When Nose got one right and yorked Branscombe for a brilliant 134 the game seemed over. Ultimately it was but there was still time for Nose to get deposited over deep mid wicket and bring back memories of his over against Coggy.
Mistley finally finished up 7 runs short n a great game of cricket as Rudkin fell off the last ball of the innings. Trongs is still on.
Sachin Sombrero - Eek for strangling Mistley at the death like Pauls victims before he cuts them up and eats them
Carl Hooper Blooper - Ironfist for his clanging drop
