Match report Skipper S Gauke found selection of the 2nd XI slightly more challenging this week. Many thanks particularly to the Burch boys and Chris Sparrow. They gave their all in the field and didn’t get much of a chance with the bat. Your time will come!

On a hot afternoon with Gaukey losing the toss – again, we took to the field two bowlers short. Underwood and Taylor worked hard with the new ball and managed to winkle out a couple of cheap wickets. We then undid our good work with at times some appalling fielding. At last count 7 catches were spilled. Both Banham and Gauke toiled at each end without much luck as our hosts accumulated 229 runs. Our fielding display was that of a Div 7 side and if we don’t shape up we may find ourselves on a slippery slope. Of course this was recognised by the ‘obvious’ on return back in our pavilion. We can do better and will!

Our batting display was much better this week. Noticeably Taylor 58 looked the part. He was positive but too friendly with the opposition. He must eat more Madras for breakfast. The elegant Boughton 43 showed skill and tenacity. Mark Burch will have plenty of opportunity in a long career ahead as he played down the wrong line – we all do at times Mark, just watch your father. Then came a flurry between Banham and Cuff. Banham’s winter sprint training paid dividends. He managed two quick singles before calling for gas and air. His demise was unfortunate as the run rate increased. Prentice then arrived at the crease, money spilling from his pockets. He smashed a straight six, but there was too much to be done. We fell 25 runs short, far less than we had conceded in the field! All to do next week. Well done Underwood, some quality moaning on the way home.
