Clacton v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 13 Jun 2015 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs

Match report A dreary day with drizzle in the air seemed perfectly fitting for the trip to the unique Vista Road venue for a match against undefeated Clacton. Having been spanked twice by Clacton last year the twos were keen to turn this around, though clearly no one is keen on a trip to Vista Road. Hugo Douglas so not keen that he called off on Saturday morning and Hollands driver headed for Harwich instead.

Vista Road (or Essex's Chantry Park) poses questions that you see at few other cricket grounds - Will that shopper wandering around square leg stop the ball? Are they looking for their shopping trolley which I think is being used to put out the flags? How many chunks of glass or other trinkets will I find on the outfield? and a new one from Archie this year 'Who do I need to ask for a toilet seat?'

The first question this year was what should Flopdock do when East won the toss with Gunders was still en route (via Harwich) and with Gravell reluctant to arrive until the last possible moment. On what looked like a seamer friendly track, Flopdock elected to bowl. Perhaps inspired by the recent New Zealand vs England series Clacton were inspirationally adventurous. The opening overs saw a mixture of wild aggression, a sprinkling of fortune and a large dose of Bhatt brilliance. The scoring rate rumbled on at nearly five an over consistently throughout the Clacton innings. An excellent opening spell from Ashwin, which showed consistent line, length and movement at a decent pace was the clear highlight from Copdock. BhattMan picked up 4 wickets in the opening salvo and later two more but it could have been even better had an early chance in the slips been snapped up too. A fielding performance perhaps summed up by Reuben asking to swap positions with Jenko and get him to field at deep midwicket, not realising that Jenko was not only bowling, but had been for the last 6 overs. Clacton were indebted to overseas player Turner and Lewis Kirk who contributed the majority of the runs but Flopdock could look back at spurned chances to both when they were yet to get into their stride and ultimately despite the admirable Ashwin efforts the 193 for 9 amassed at tea looked decent but not unachievable.

Tea itself was a poor affair, helped slightly by some warm mini sausage rolls and the absence of Gauke ensured there was plenty to go round.

Flopdocks batting effort started poorly, Reuben quickly dismissed. JP and Ricey followed shortly after and Copdock were in danger of falling to a third successive trouncing at the hands of Clacton. The glorious Gravell had other ideas. As the batsmen at one end played and missed, scratched and edged their way to and from the hutch without making much headway on the scoreboard, Gravell moved through the gears. A succession of pulls, sumptuous flowing cover drives and outrageously timed legside pick ups made a mockery of the woes being experienced at the other end. His hundred, out of 150 gave Copdock an outside chance of victory but when he ultimately was caught at long on with 35 needed the game was up and the rest of the rabbits folded in the same over with Copdock all out for 161.

Another defeat then to Clacton, though two great individual performances from Ashwin and Archie. Chances again for Copdock to turn over the big boys but not quite able to keep up their efforts through the full 90 overs though signs of encouragement and the progress being made.

Tommy Cooper Blooper - Reuben (see fielding comment above)
Brian Lara Tiara - Ashwin Bhatt - Escape from Umpiring duty by running off when Dutchie brought a drink out for Archie - genius Ash.
