Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Woolpit II on Sat 18 Apr 2015 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report Copdock 2s kicked the 2015 campaign off with a convincing win over Woolpit at the Oval.
The ground looked a picture and was in excellent condition – thanks to our benevolent curator Mr Taylor.
A pre match ear infection had robbed the Scoobies of batting powerhouse, Ady Nel, but the side still looked strong enough to compete in Div 3 following last season’s promotion. Debuts were given to Adam Hopkins, Fergus Atkins (in for Nelly) and Jon ‘Harry Lime’ Percival – more on that later - and it was pleasing to note all players reporting at the meet time or even before it ! Unfortunately seasoned pro’s East and Wootton had already discovered that despite the promise of umpires for this season, none had been appointed for this match and were already plotting ways to avoid later potential umpiring stints.

After a gentle warm up it was time for the toss. On a warm day with a flat pitch and a strong batting line up, Gunder decided to bowl first, mainly to keep Reuben interested until it was his turn to bat !

Woolpit started well against the new ball pairing of Bhatt and Underwood who both struggled to bowl in consistent areas, however, Ashwin struck a significant blow by bowling Thompson with the score on 30. Jenkin and East were introduced into the attack by the 12th over and, despite the pitch offering nothing, were able to dry up the flow of runs. West, the other Woolpit opener was given a couple of lives as he made a solid half century, however, none of his batting partners were able to break the shackles placed on them by the experienced duo. Although wickets were hard to come by Woolpit never really got into top gear on the early season batting paradise and, after Ashwin returned to the attack to account for West in the penultimate over, Woolpit closed their innings on what appeared to be an under par 179/6. Jenko and Eek took the bowling honours and Sexy also chipped it with a smart throw from the boundary to effect a run out.

A pleasant tea was taken in warm spring sunshine as the batting order was finalised and the East / Wootton partnership sought sanctuary from having to put on the white coats.

Copdock’s reply got off to the worst possible start as Reuben clothed a short ball to square leg in the first over without a run on the board. Harry Lime joined St Archie Gravell at the crease and was soon into his stride cutting the ball convincingly to the third man boundary. St Archie, although circumspect at first (this being his first bat since last season !) was also able to manoeuvre the ball around comfortably. As the partnership grew, Woolpit seemed to have an aversion to placing any fielders at third man which is exactly where JP kept hitting the ball, getting full value for his shots on the fast outfield. St Archie was soon able to start expressing himself with some beautifully timed drives on either side of the wicket as Copdock took control. The duo put the quality of the pitch into context as they gradually accelerated the run rate, JP finishing off the innings in style with a flurry of maximums.

So an excellent 9 wicket win. The two superb innings of JP and St Archie perfectly backed up the bowling exertions of Eek, Jenko and Ash earlier, and although there is some potential for improvement in our all round fielding and bowling effort, this was a good performance for our first game of the season.

Match awards
Tommy Cooper Blooper - St Archie for his dropped dolly off Eek
Brian Lara Tiara - JP for a magnificent debut innings
