Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club

FandCY U11 v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Under 11 Sharks on Wed 09 Jul 2014 at 6.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 45 runs

Match report

Copdock Sharks arrived at Dellwood Avenue on the crest of a wave, hungry for continued league success. Influential Skipper Max Cowen won the toss and elected to bat under darkening clouds with gusts approaching 60 knots. Kajeal and Ewan opened up with a swashbuckling partnership of 25, Ewan launching a rum six over the ropes for good measure. As usual the Sharks middle order dropped anchor as the Felixstowe radar gave very little by way of extras until Archie Simpson entered the fray, propelling his first shot into the mid-ships of mid-wicket. Felixstowe having lost this man over-board to injury invited Cameron Towers to assist in the field, never one to miss an opportunity Master Towers promptly displayed his exceptional fielding skills by running out both his first and second mate.(Never mind, worse things happen at sea!) Copdock Sharks regained their bearings with Captain Cowan hitting 22 ably assisted by Varun leaving Felixstowe a target of 277 to win.

Both teams charged their vessels and our hosts rolled out the barrel of biscuits before heading back onto the pitch in the bracing conditions. The Copdock team had an enforced colour change behind the stumps with the more than ‘Abel Brown’ giving way to the ever improving Green, Ewan’s first job was to stop scud missile from Varun that most keepers would have given a wide berth, this set the tone for the best bowling and fielding display by the Sharks all season, they hunted as a shiver and did not give their opposition an inch. Highlights including admirable stops in the field by Shannjeal and Cameron, a brace of wickets for Varun and Max, a debut wicket for 8 year old Shannjeal and George Quinton’s finest wicket to date had the crowd roaring with delight as his spin drifted to a leading edge that he snapped up in both hands diving forwards. A very impressive and tidy Felixstowe side were unable to hold Copdock in this form as they were kept on the hook by first rate bowling and fielding, Jamie put in his best all round performance so far, Matthew bowling as tight as ever and an impressive wicket maiden from Kajeal left the opposition stranded on 231-8.

Thanks must go to my hardy crew, Tim Green and Lindsay Towers for their efforts with pen and stones respectively and the wholehearted support from the other parents. This game was particularly enjoyable due to the high standard of play and spirit shown by both teams, it was a credit to junior cricket. The seasons voyage ends next week inland at home to Kesgrave, see you all then! ‘Fair winds and following seas’ Jim.

Note: batters' scores are their "nett" batting scores after taking 5 runs off for each wicket lost.
