Halstead II v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 05 Jul 2014 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report Ethan Wright Wright Wright !

Disaster struck early for the seconds on Saturday as, firstly, after the usual excellent midweek weather and poor weekend forecast, and a traffic jam on the A12 caused by a sports car, described by Dutch as a Rarri, (what a jazz hat), John Eek realised his mobile had limited battery which meant tweeting activities would have to be seriously curtailed.
The resulting late arrival at Halstead meant any pre match warm up would also be shortened much to the delight of the majority of those playing !
After winning the toss Gunder decided to insert our hosts who had a much changed team from that which arrived at Copdock on the first day of the season and, on paper at least, looked a much stronger outfit.
Imagine how worried Gunder felt as the Halstead openers, Pont and Lunow-Haldane, tucked in to the early offerings on what now appeared to be a flat fast scoring track. At 45/0 off 7 overs Copdock were staring down the barrel, however, after a rash shot by Lunow-Haldane, caught by the evergreen Cuff at mid on, and a wicket for Harry Cook, clean bowling his namesake, the scoreboard started to look much more encouraging. The runs now started to dry up and with the introduction of Eek, wickets started to tumble. Pont, who had played really well for his 37, tried to smash Gunder into Braintree and was clean bowled, and then with a field resembling a Mumbai test match Eek took three quick wickets to reduce Halstead to 81/6. The only question mark from the captain was how such a close catching cordon could consist of Wright, Gauke, Cuff and Sharpe !
Harry returned from the 'dip' end to take another wicket leaving Halstead at 86/7 and facing being bowled out for less than 100.
Fortunately for the home side, captain Rippingale and Walter, stuck to their task, taking minimum risks and slowly moving the total towards respectability. Eek finally removed the obdurate Rippingale and then Kev Banham, looked to have removed Walter when he chipped one to Dutch on the mid wicket fence. Inexplicably this was fumbled by the club President and the chance went begging. Walter and No 10 Roper took full advantage and with some clean hitting helped their side reach 165/8 at tea.
A heavy shower extended the mid innings interval as the team tried to work out how good the total they were chasing was and what the Halstead bowling attack had to offer. The newish opening partnership of Reuben and Ethan took their guard as the older guard of Eek and Cuff started on a lap of the field.
Reuben must have thought it was his birthday as the home bowlers, both of whom were of a reasonable pace, decided they wanted to test the middle of the pitch. The scorecard raced along at almost 10 an over for the first 6 overs as boundary followed boundary. It was only the introduction of the slower change bowlers which induced a mini wobble for Copdocks innings with the score on 63. It was about this time that Eek and Cuffy had finished their lap ! Reuben was first to go, bowled by Pont in his first over, and then Banham, given out LBW, a decision which looked quite harsh as the wicket keeper appealed from about a foot outside leg stump !
Fortunately the prospects of a Copdock collapse were snuffed out as, first Ethan, then Dutch, took control. Ethan reached his 50 with another boundary and then Dutch took toll of the other bowling on offer, stroking his way to a quickfire 42*. Ethan ended on 79* and the hundred partnership had been reached.
The batting had been so dominant that the total was overhauled before drinks, in the 23rd over. So an excellent victory and put into context a magnificent bowling display by Eek earlier in the day, 15 overs 4/21.
Well done everyone !
