Match report A win’s a win !
Copdock and OI 2s got their 2014 season off to a nail biting win against relegated Halstead 2s.
Having opted to bat first on a superb looking Old London Road track, Copdock soon found themselves in trouble at 31/3 with key batsmen Holland, Banham and Magnus back in the hutch, all accounted for by the impressive Statham. Jonny Rice and debutant Richard Sexton managed to settle the innings down with some confident stroke play before Sexton went back to a full ball and was given out LBW, for a classy 30, on the stroke of drinks. In came Ethan Wright who also looked very comfortable against the Halstead attack and with Rice seemingly set, the pair added 70 for the 5th wicket before both fell in quick succession, for 49 and 48 respectively. Having looked likely to post a 200+ total Copdocks innings faltered somewhat after this, with only John East getting to double figures. The innings closed in the 42nd over and at tea the Scoobies were on an under par 178 all out. For Halstead, Statham finished with 5/38 and Harris 4/31.
The Halstead innings started with a slightly wayward opening over from Harry Cook, but, as soon as he got into his rhythm, he looked dangerous and two Halstead wickets fell in quick succession, one bowled, the other a smart catch from the tumbling Gauke at slip, to leave Halstead at 14/2. At the other end, Sexton bowled a tidy opening spell without any luck and was replaced by another debutant, leg spinner Brad Mason, who soon settled on a consistent line and length. East replaced Cook from the tennis court end and the spin duo gradually put the squeeze on Halstead’s 3rd wicket pair before Mason snared Surridge, bowling the experienced batsmen as he tried to up the scoring rate. At this point the ‘Dock’ seemed in control as the run rate went up and wickets started to fall, however, Halstead’s Statham and Harris had other ideas. Coming together with the score in the 90s these two, appearing in little trouble on an increasingly flat looking pitch, added 60 comfortable runs, taking their side to the brink of victory. Having batted their 45 overs Halstead were still 20 runs short but with the 3 overs gifted them, as a result of Copdock not utilising their full allocation, they still looked favourites to win. Cook, however, had other ideas. Back for his third spell he bowled Harris and with East bowling a tight penultimate over, Halstead needed 7 to win from the last over. With nerves of steel Harry bowled B Roper before Statham was run out trying to get back on strike. Halstead finished 3 runs short and Cook had finished with fine figures of 6/55. East and Mason also bowled excellent spells without much luck.
So a ‘rusty’ early season performance with plenty of room for improvement. On a positive note, as well as the bowling highlights, there were some fine batting cameos from Ricey, Ethan Wright and Richard Sexton, the fielding was of a good standard, and the fact that we won without playing to our full potential hopefully means we will get better in the coming weeks.
