Match report The first team travelled to Mallard's new ground on Saturday with last week's batting debacle still fresh in the mind.

Although Mallards are bottom of the table so far this season they are always a competitive side and I'd be hugely surprised if this is where they finish the season.

The first team were at full strength with selection debates from earlier in the week behind them. Reuben Sharpe and Clive narrowly missed out and would spearhead the seconds search for victory.

The prospect of play looked bleak with tropical storms hitting the convoy on the way up to Great Yarmouth. However play was to start at about 1pm with the game reduced to 48 overs for the team batting first and 42 for the side batting second.

Mallards won the toss and elected to bowl on a pretty green track, copdock would almost certainly have bowled first as well.

Archie and Chris Swallow opened the bating and both started brightly. Archie hit two crisp boundarys before popping a ball that stopped back to the bowler for 8. Chris and Martyn Cull then put on 50 before both fell in the 30's. A theme that dotted the score card with most people getting into double figures before falling. To be fair, it showed that on this wicket you were never really " in ".

With a late innings surge Copdock finished on 194 for 7 - a pretty decent effort all round.

Copdock started fairly poorly for the first time this season and although James East got an early wicket, Mallards got to 79 before the second wicket fell. Tom Jenkin and Chris Swallow bowled in tandem and took wickets every couple of overs, both finishing with 4 wickets. Mallards finished on 147-9. Copdock had two overs to take the final wicket and force a win, something we just couldn't manage.

To be fair it was a super effort to get Mallards 9 down and a welcome turn around from last week. What it does highlight is that perhaps last week was a one off. If we had won the game last week, when we should have and snuck home on saturday, we may well be top!

So this week - The batting looks in a better place, nice to see Matt Wareing back and fit, he did a good job bowling in to the wind. With the pitches being fairly green so far this season it was please that Chris and Tom Jenkin bowled so well when called upon.

As always - the future's bright, the future's Copdock.
