Match report The First eleven travelled to the reigning champions on Saturday for the first game of the season. Having worked tirelessly throughout the winter to strengthen the squad ( and attracting Hugo Douglas, Matt Wareing , Chris Warne , Clive and both Essex players Jaik Mickleburgh and Greg Smith ) it was a shame that only Chris Warne and Clive were available due to injuries and unavailability.

New Captain James East lost the toss and Copdock were asked to bat first on a greenish wicket. Swardeston opened up with highly experienced minor county pair Thomas and Eccles, both of which made early inroads into the Copdock line up. Batting was hard early on and Copdock looked as though they could be bundled out for under 100. However some excellent batting from Jed Cawkwell ( 43 not out ) and to a lesser extent James East enabled Copdock to post 173 all out.

It's interesting that half the team made double figures, which suggests they should have gone on to get a bigger score and the other half of the team faced 29 balls between them, perhaps more application is needed.

Copdock took to the field and Swarsden's batsmen exploded into life and looked as though the game would finished very early, however quick wickets meant that copdock got back into the game and at times looked as though they may win a game they never really deserved to. Swardeston however reached the target required 8 wickets down and scraped home. Tom Rash took 4 wickets and James East 3.

Some positives to take from the game are that we ran the champions very close, we never gave up and even when all but beaten turned things around not once but twice.

If we shake off the early season rustiness, I think we'll have a strong season and compete with everyone in every game.
