Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report Derby Delight for the 'Dock'

The Scoobies made the short trip to Clayhall to face neighbours Ipswich 2nds and came away with a convincing 9 wicket victory.

Following the disappointment of having last weekends match against Hadleigh abandoned, it was good to arrive at Ipswich on a reasonably warm day and see a ground in excellent condition.

The team were strengthened by the inclusion of Reuben Sharpe, making his first appearance of the season, and Sam Handley, an exciting prospect, who has joined the club from Hadleigh. Kevin Banham and Dutch Holland also returned after a week away and there was a debut for Shyam Patel. Team coach Taylor, missed out due to his coaching commitments with Suffolk Ladies in the North of the country, whilst Nick Bigg returned to the Sunday 2nds to maximise his bowling opportunities.

After a reasonable warm up, cut short by a brief shower, the Captain lost the toss and the Docksters were asked to bowl first on a remarkably hard, flat surface. Opening the bowling, Jamie G once again settled into an excellent rhythm, although at the other end, the Underwood radar was somewhat erratic. Jamie picked up the early wicket of Pryke, bowling him comprehensively, and then induced an edge from Drury, first ball, which was unfortunately dropped at first slip. As always seems to happen in these situations, the batsman took full advantage of this, punishing anything slightly loose.

Although a couple of bowling changes were made, including a first bowl at this level for young Ollie Williams, the two Ipswich batters, Drury and Doughty, looked very comfortable, so it was decided now was the time to introduce left armer, Handley. Sam immediately settled in on an excellent length, causing both batsmen problems, and within 4 balls had snared the dangerous Drury, caught at mid on. He took a wicket in his next over too, Bumphrey LBW in front of all three.
The experienced Banham, wheeling away at the other end, was also squeezing the run rate.

Sam continued to bamboozle the Ipswich batters and although some aggressive hitting pushed their score towards the 200 mark, he took four further wickets, including two in two balls in the final over of the innings, to complete a terrific spell.

Mention should also be made of chairman Gauke. The Paul McGrath of the side, who has to manage his back injury by missing out on pre match warm ups, bowled a very tidy 5 over spell at the end of the innings from the other end to help restrict Ipswich to 188/7 from their 45 overs.

As is always the case at half time, you never really know whether such a total would be competitive, on such a flat pitch, but any fears were quickly put aside as Reuben and Dutch got to work. Both looked in little trouble as they put on 90 for the first wicket. When Dutch damaged a quad muscle early on, Sam volunteered to be his runner, probably appreciating that this was his only chance of getting out to the middle with his bat, such was the dominance of the openers ! Olympic legend Ted Baker also ensured he got a spell out in the middle by umpiring for the first 15 overs !
When Dutch was adjudged caught at mid off, Jamie G joined Reuben and was able to build a nice cameo innings to get his batting up and running for the season.
At the other end Reuben was superb, minimising anything unnecessarily risky, he stroked the ball effortlessly all round the park, keeping his concentration to ensure he saw the 'Winnies' home, ending up on a superb 119*.

My Man of the Match award this week is jointly shared by Sam and Reuben, two terrific performances.

In the end then a comfortable win which keeps us nicely in the top half of the table. Let's continue the momentum into next week when we face Stowmarket at home.
