Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club

Ipswich School U12s v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Under 13 Crusaders on Wed 20 Jun 2012 at 5.15pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 3 runs

Match report Copdock Phoenix met for the second time in a week to play another Ipswich School side - this time themuch stronger U12 A team.

Ipswich batted first, and a very tight opening spell of bowling by James Gray and Finlay Shorten teed up an astonishing 4 over spell shared between Tommy Downie and Greg Bott where 3 wickets fell in 12 balls all three of which Tommy had a hand in - two caught off his bowling and a run out following some comedy running betweenthe wickets.

Ipswich school rallied well and no further wickets fell in the remaining overs as Phoenix swapped and changed the bowling trying to make a break through. Ipswich racked up run after run behind square on the leg side - something to work on in training as the batsmen scoring those runs kept playing the shot purely because Phoenix didn't plug the gap.

Ipswich posted a formidable 126 off their 20 overs leaving Phoenix an uphill task of over a run a ball run chase.

Despite some tight bowling at the top of the Ipswich order Copdock's batsmen weren't really threatened but similarly they weren't scoring too freely either. After 10 overs copdock were 49 for none needing 7.8 an over to win. Oscar Bond kicked on a gear and smashed the middle order bowlers to all parts of the ground. Finlay Shorten tonked a 6 between backward point and third man before being run out off a Billy Smarts Circus attempt at 'two'.

Oscar Bond continued to apply the pressure taking his score to 45 before being caught at point off a slightly mis-timed shot. James Gray kept up that pressure scoring 15 off 12 balls before also holing out at square leg off the second ball of the penultimate over.

With 9 needed Tommy Downie and James Gray managed to drag the score within 3 of a losing-tie, four of the win.

Oscar Bond was declared Phoenix Man of the Match.
