Match report
CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS CHAMPIONS
Coggy travelled to the Copdock Oval, the final obstacle in the come back of the century, the only side now standing between Copdock (and OI's) and Div 1 glory. Groundsman Shorten had been at the ground since seven struggling to remove the layers, upon layers, of covers which had been placed on the off chance of rain.
When Nose turned up with Reuben, both looking pale and withdrawn, thoughts immediately went to the Frinton choke all those years ago but this turned out to be unfounded. As we know Reuben has turned over a new leaf now being a father and a sportsman. It was simply nerves and a week of sleepless nights.
A brilliant Thomas strike in warm up secured another destruction of the 'Young 'uns' leaving the final score for the season very much in favour of the older wiser heads and Reuben. Having excelled here Thomas turned terrible beginning a complicated cone warm up that left all confunded.
Eventually the footballers finished and the rope could be put out and the game began with Copdock going out to field with the Coggy huddle proclaiming how nice it would be to bat out the 50 overs. Paul Wright (not Game) was building on the bridges made by Nose during the week and in constant contact with Mildenhall to make sure they were aware of the Copdock victory stroll.
With the first ball 'Vader' Thomas showed why he is disliked everywhere (with some serial appealing) and Nose showed why he doesn't get any wickets (doesn't swing the ball enough to get LBW's). Desperate to overtake the absent Jenkin ('Rabbit in the headlights' Jenkin was crashing yet another wedding looking for easy pickings) skipper Swallow took the new ball at the other end and was soon in wicket taking form sending Bragg back to the hutch in a Shepperson-esque LBW. Nose chipped in with a wicket as a Blackwell chipped to A Gravell and Coggy were heading for calamity.
Some hefty blowing from the oval shaped Ovenstone helped Coggy get back on top - with some particularly pleasing punishment of James 'Voldermort' East, including one mighty dispatch through the covers and one back over his head. The parity was however short lived. Once Nel replaced Nose he quickly removed Ovenstone and broker into a raucous scream, the likes of which he hasn't made since he last chased, caught, skinned and ate a Karibu on the plains in the summer of 2010. Some bunker like resistance followed which the Swallow artillery pierced with regularity, helped on occasion by some remarkable fielding. The highlight came in the form of the dismissal of Rees, a firm favourite with the Copdock crowd. A typically accurate Swallow delivery entice Rees towards him and found the top edge of his bat, sending the ball soaring towards the vacant square leg boundary. With Ricey having looked more like Reuben under the high ball this year than Reuben himself nobody could have expected what happened next. Having put down the straw he was sucking upon Ricey sprinted to his right and threw himself along the ground with one hand outstretched. To the delight of Copdock and the chagrin of Coggy the ball nestled nicely in the Rice mitt, Rees departed with just 2 to his name. The wickets began to tumble and the nerves of the skipper began to fray causing both Thomas and East (Jr and more pleasant) to go back to the treaty of Fairfields and save Will Blackwell from certain destruction from a wayward Swallow throw. Blackwell returned the favour providing Thomas with a catch of IED East at short log and the end of the innings was nigh. Nel and Swallow wrapping up the tail with Nel capturing 'BIG' George Blackwell with a full straight one (Nose take note). Coggy ended with 116 and the goings on at Mildenhall looked less important. With the innings being wrapped up early the tea wasn't quite ready (NOT ready Rich) so Copdock went out to bat. As usual Archie outscored Nelly blasting his way to 31 before letting Reuben have a go. Nelly whacked 45 then gave it up too in usual fashion. There was still time however for Reuben to get out LBW pulling a half-volley, everyone's favourite dismissal, before fitting Captain Chris hit the winning runs.
The celebrations afterwards were great fun once the magnanimous Coggy had departed. Nose cheated at liar dice (how is that even possible!), East senior sung loudly, Jamie Smith sponsored our club and Tony Catley, well we all know.
Well done guys.
