Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Sunday XI v Copford on Mon 30 Aug 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 5 runs
Match report
The Battle of the Copse.
Copdock strode to war on day 8 of a used pitch. The result was, that good bowling was difficult to get away, attacking far harder than defence, similar to those battles at Passchendaele, Rorke's Drift and Gallipoli. An attritional stalemate ensued, after Captain Thomas, fourth Copdock lancers, won another toss inviting the invaders to field. Gravell looked scratchy so decided to try and manoeuvre the ball off the square, using his feet. Eventually his vigil ended with a sharp caught and bowled.
Green, Ward and Shorten surrendered early, caught and bowled, bowled and bowled.
This brought together Captain Thomas and Lord Wheaton. Wheaton blocked 37 consecutive dot balls in his stay, but nonetheless held the line, rarely did he counter attack, when he did it was explosive, like mortar fire.
Wheaton eventually fell to the firing squad after he was captured in no mans land. Private Manning, only 18 sneaking off to fight, put up a little resistance, before falling in youthful fashion. General Gauke,(Melchiot) commander of the Eastern Front, a modern day Montgomery. Managed to make it to the front line, following many miscommunications with the front to advance. He was rumoured to be missing a pigeon. Gauke attempted to advance the line, however, the speed of his advance was easily countered. Colour Sergeant Druitt came out at 9, and in partnership with Captain Thomas put on 51. Thomas got the command from HQ to go over the top with the big push. Out of singles mode and into full viking warfare.
Thomas led the men into the mess hall. Preparing themselves for the second stage of the attack, Lance Corporal Catchpole looking in a state of trance.
Bell, the Achilles like batting figure for Copford looked good early, until the Catchpole Thomas combination put pay to that whilst the other opener found Lord Wheaton at Mid off. Two early wickets and it could be a big victory, similar to Hannibal and the Carthaginians victory over the Romans at Cannae. It looked even more so when Catchpole rattled thruogh three LBWs to finish his spell, 8 overs 5-20, sensational. The Victoria Cross may be making it's way to LC Catchpole. Druitt then weighed in with his 8 overs 2-13. At this stage the invaders were on the ropes at 57-7. However an 89 run partnership made it seem like the unlikely was on. Copford's fighting spirit in this partnership was resemblant of the Russians last stand at Stalingrad, and the sniping of Vassily Zsaitsev. They eeked there way closer to the victory.
In the end, copdock managed to sneak out to victory, like the Allies at Dunkirk, victory and 20 points. Just. NCO Shorten just managing to take two fer bowling filth in the last over. Private Gravell also managed to bowl a maiden 4 overs from the death.
A good win, with notable performances from Catchpole, Druitt and Thomas.
Copdock and OI go marching on.
