Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Sunday XI v Clacton-On-Sea on Sun 15 Aug 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 100 Runs
Match report
EVERY CAT HAS HIS DAY.
Copdock continued to pursue their youth policy, with 8 under 21's in the side. Davey, Swallow and East unlucky not to be included in this side, particuarly after Davey's 98 in the previous game. The square looked pretty good considering the biblical monsoon over the last week, the rumour is groundsman Shorten is building an Ark next to the Bob Pratt Memorial Grandstand Garden Decking Veranda. Thomas returned from all sorts of family parties to lead the troops, Gauke thus expected a loss.
Thomas won the toss and had a bat. Green and Gravell, watched a Clacton opening bowler yip up, as Clacton started their way to a monumental extras total. Gravell looked assured early, whilst Green played some good shots. Clactons South African with a name as long as his run him bowled with some decent wheels and was a good test for Jamie and all the youngsters who did well. Green eventually was bowled leaving the off spinner, get that pad out there! Burch was a glorious flash in the pan, LBW to a slower ball. Raj came together with Gravell and did some building, though Raj had some wafty moments.
At drinks Copdock were 99-2, a good platform, message to batsmen, milk 1's and 2's until 30, do not throw wicket away. Over 25, ball 4: Raj attempts to flap spinner down the ground mishitting it into the wind to be caught tamely at mid off, not the best death. Next ball Gravell overbalances and in a whirlwind of keeping magical mystery the keeper knee'd it into his chest onto his chin and knocked the bail off, quite a death, so from 135-2 copdock were now 135-4. Gravell went soon after for 0, in Sharpe like style going back to a full ball, LBW. Thomas and Catlow built for a little while, before Thomas also overbalanced and was genuinely stumped this time. Catlow continued to build but unfortunately shared a run out with Ethan. This compiled the woe for Ethan who had lost rock paper scissors to bat at 7 or 8, who said man management was dead.
Catlow came together with O Gravell, and O Gravell looked like an (over 50) man possessed. He was hitting a golf like fades through wide mid off and tennis like forehands through mid-wicket, sublime. Catlow wasn't to be upstaged and took a liking to the Pro's last over. The value of this partnership cannot be underestimated.
222-8 copdock finished, and waited and waited for Clacton to come to tea, in the end giving up. My personal highlight of the tea was the chocolate brownie cake, but as Druitt, J mentioned, a drop of clotted cream would have enhanced it out of belief. I feel this an appropriate time to mention the dreadful standard of sightscreen moving of Raj and Gravell, H, who failed to move the screen on numerous occaisions and a personal highlight was Gravell trying to hurdle a beam of the sightscreen and falling over it. Raj who had a tough week, after a dreadful game of Liar dice on Friday, first he tried to pass on two pair Aces and Sixes, next he said i'm rolling one, then rolling five! Took the lieing a touch far.
Wright and Gravell took the new ball. Wright took an early wicket with a good pitched up ball. Clacton then built a partnership before Catlow and Druitt began to dry up the runs. A typical copdock bunsen, Catlow got the ball to turn and bounce, whilst Druitt did well to tack into Hurricane Steven. After Catlow bowled a couple of tight overs, it was clear Turner was going to try to hit Catlow out the attack, after two blows to leg Catlow kept his head and got an almost dream left arm orthodox dismissal. Turner waltzed down the track and with turn and bounce beat the outside edge, for Thomas to remove the bails. Catlow then got Brown with a full ball LBW a very similar dismissal to last year as I remember.
Druitt struggled into the gale, claiming a good caught and bowled before Karma struck. The Clacton wicket keeper had claimed two stumpings from rebounds off his body. He came down the track as Druitt then beat him through the gate and did for both the batsman and the keeper as the ball bounced off Thomas' pad onto the off stump for a comical stumping, Mother Cricket strikes back!
Druitt had two more, caught and bowled and caught Gravell, he's back he finally caught one! Druitt bowled a monumental stint into the wind, especially to only return 23 from his 8. It is at this stage I should hail the fielding and bowling performance of Copdock, who looked sharp at all times and bowled well. Clacton gave 56 extras to Copdock's 15.
Clactom were eventually bowled out for 122. A comprehensive victory for Copdock. The day couldn't have been much better, not even Wheaton's presence would have improved the day.
You can't win anything with kids.
