Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Ipswich & East Suffolk II on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets.

Match report Another poor bowling and fielding performance meant Copdock lost yet another game we should have won comfortably.

On a beautiful day Copdock won their first toss of the summer and opted to bat first. With condiitions in their favour the batsmen took full advantage of some wayward IES bowling. Sogwag and Jamie Green got the innings off to a flyer. They both put away the bad balls and with some good running Copdock were going at 6 an over without breaking sweat. Both openers went on to complete fine fifties and when Sogs was eventually dismissed Mark Burch continued the onslaught.

He played yet another fine fine innings (79) and enjoyed good support from first Green and then Baker.

Yes, the pitch was good and yes the outfield was incredibly quick but 260 was still an excellent total. At tea we all knew Keith Howlett was the big wicket but Copdock were confident of defending their largest total of the season so far.

Unfortunately this confidence was misplaced... Howlett and Debenham came out with all guns blazing and the opening combination of Underwood and Smith were soon under pressure. With no help from the pitch or in the air both bowlers found life difficult and IES kept up with the required run rate from the start. The introduction of Banham to the attack did restore some degree of control but runs continued to come freely at the other end. It soon became evident that wickets were going to the key.

Unfortunately this is where we really let ourselves down. 3 vital catches were dropped and the ground fielding became increasingly ragged. The skipper lost his temper, Sogs looked like he was going to explode, Banham kept swearing under his breath, and Cuff thought it was down to the Albanians. Not good!!

In the end IES got the winning runs with a couple of overs to spare. Keith Howlett finished on an exceptional 113 not out. He is a quality player at this level and timed his innings superbly. Even Cuffy has to admit he is "not bad"...!!

So, at the half way point of the season we lie in mid table obscurity. Traditionally we improve from this point onwards and we will certainly need to if we want to start winning consistently...
