Long Melford v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 05 Jun 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 52 runs

Match report A solid team performance earned Copdock a well deserved 20 points.

On a hot and sunny day Copdock won the toss and made the easy decision to bat first. Despite the early loss of Jamie Green, Martin "Sogwag" Taylor and Mark Burch ensure the innings got off to a great start. Sogwag played particularly aggresively to record a superb 56 - the highlight was undoubtedly a back foot cover drive for six to bring up his 50. Comparisons to the Indian opening batsmen soon followed...

The scoring rate for the first 15 or so overs was well over 6 and at the half way point we looked on for a massive score. Clearly the Long Melford skipper had a different view and maintained an extraordinary attacking field for most of our innings. As yet another 4 down to third man kept the run rate going we were certainly not complaining!!

Following Sogs dismissal the rate did start to fall. However, Burchy kept the scoreboard ticking and excellent cameos from the likes of Banham, Cuff, Allerton and Underwood ensured the good guys finished on 236. Burchy's innings showed remarkable maturity for such a young player and it was brilliant to see him record his first 50 for the 2s. Had it not been for a phenomenal catch he may well have gone on to reach an even bigger milestone. Nonetheless it was a great knock, and there is no doubt plenty of runs are going to come from the Burch blade this season.

At tea, we felt 236 was an above par score although Long Melford clearly felt they were in the game. The Copdock plan was to make boundaries difficult to come by and despite a promising start the required run rate rose steadily throught their innings. Scoreboard pressure eventually paid dividends as the Long Melford batsmen were forced to take more and more risks. Wickets inevitably fell, and ultimately a comfortable 52 run victory was secured. James Druitt was the pick of the Copdock bowlers with figures of 12-1-45-5.

So, 2 wins on the bounce and the climb up the table begins. Lets hope we can keep the momentum going v Wivenhoe next week...
