St Margarets v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 15 May 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 50 runs

Match report In many ways this game was more like boxing than a cricket match;

Underwood hit the canvass in the first round, Shorten and Cuff were sparring at each other all day, Banham received a warning from the officials for poor conduct, Wootton broke a thumb, and Copdock lost on points. Not a good day!!

On a good track St Margarets won the toss and opted to bat. The Copdock opening bowlers then had extraordinary starts to their spells. First ball of the innings Stevie Catch inevitably hit the perfect line and length, Todd tried to swipe across the line and top-edged to new boy Muckle... DROPPED!!! Nightmare start for a chap making his debut for a new club, although he soon put this behind him and did take an excellent catch later in the innings.

Whilst coming in for his first deliver Unders completely lost his footing and collapsed to the floor in a heap. Fair to say the laughter from his team-mates got in the way of any concern for his well being. Fortunately G man was fine and went on to complete an excellent opening spell.

Copdock were pretty happy to restrict the opposition to 162 all out, with all the bowlers performing well. Jamie Green in particular showed great promise...

However, fair to say the St Margarets innings did not go without incident... In the fourth over Scotty Wootton took a nasty one on the end of the thumb. We "politely" told him to stop moaning and get on with it. Turns out he has broken his thumb, will have to wear a cast at his wedding, and will be out for 6 weeks - sorry Scott!!

However, this was just the start of things... Running round to catch a steepler Shorten was distracted by an ironic "GOOD LUCK" shout from Cuff at the crucial moment. Shorts dropped the catch and lost it with Cuff, the skipper lost it with Cuff, Cuff blamed it on the Albanians and for a while all hell broke list. Fortunately things calmed down just in time for Banham to enter the scene and start abusing the St Margarets batsmen. Afraid I have to do my Arsene Wenger impression here and report "I did not see what happened". The normally calm Banham apologised at the end of the over and this particular incident was over.

Unfortunately the Cuff/Shorten debacle rumbled on and the atmosphere at tea was a little frosty!! Still, 162 was eminently chaseable and we were optimistic of getting the required runs. Unfortunately, this optimism was badly misplaced. With the exception of Peter Boughton none of the Copdock batsmen got going, and it was only an excellent last wicket partnership between Catchpole and Stuart Ward that earned us a batting point.

A massively disapppointing result, as this really was a game we should have won. We have the ability in the team to turn things around and the time has come when we must do so...
