Match report Copdock Battered at the Seaside.

Copdock left in high spirits, once the captain had found out he would be able to get all the kids in 2 cars. At one stage the side was worried we may have to leave Mark Burch behind! For the second time this season Captain Thomas misjudged the journey length, arriving an hour early, without chris swallow to do a warm up! The News of The World got a good reading, they think Jacko is still alive!!!

On to the more important business the cricket. After the opposition captain expressed his delight at a Copdock side containing no player by the name of East, he was so kind as to let Copdock win the toss. Knowing fully well with the team he had, the captain chose to bat first. Brilliant we all thought, watching Scott Harvey and Archie Gravell bat for ever and ever in the sunshine!! The plan was falling into place when Tom Davey Sacrificed his wicket. When I say sacrificed, I meant doing his best impression of Jenko, asking for Leg Stump and batting 2 foot outside leg! Having confused the pro for the first over, Davey managed to miss a straight onein the second over, claiming it kept low. It didn't and I gave the pitch a good rating. However, the team nearly missed the whole event as we were still trying to figure out the electronic scoreboard! This brought Gravell in, who thinking he was Tristan Jervis made a flashy 42, before holing out to Long Off, throwing away the chance of his 323rd hundred of the season. After Scott Harvey got rumped up by the pro he also got out for not many. Mark Burch strolled to the crease and played a truly gritty innnings. After looking a bit village swapping helmets with poor Archie on his way back to the pavillion, Burch got stuck in and rotated the strike superbly, hitting the gaps and running hard. A personal highlight of the innings, was Burch being Castled by a spinner after being hit in the Jatzcrackers! He got very little sympathy from his captain, who was too busy laughing at the other end! Thomas who was brought to the crease after Westaway hit his first ball into Kirby-Le-Soken, missed the next and was out! According to All who observed, Thomas was making the pitch look like a minefield, having his first knock for a month! Get that nonner in the twos. He was put out of his misery when Foakes served up a gentle half volley which he put into the hands of cover. The rumours in the pub garden of a pavillion, from the 3,000 spectators, was that it was like a Myxie Rabbit being left to slowly die. The Cat wiped 15 in front of a wailing crowd of pussy(cats). Mark Burch batted through with the tail to take the innings to 184-9, not bad but plenty more was needed!

After a good chicken tikka sandwich, half of which ended up on the captains shirt. The side were about to field, when the classically village semi-warm-up ensued. Chris Swallow was heard to be taking notes and the game of huss-the-ball-as-hard-as-you-can-at-a-poor-young-wicket-keeper, failed to get us warm for action.

When Copdock saw who was opening, you could see the joy spreading across the slips faces, but no it wasn't to be our day, as sinclair scored his first 40 runs from entirely half chances which didnt quite go to hand, afterwhich he batted OK! There were swipes, swishes, nicks, misses and I wondered at one moment whether Babe Ruth had been Reincarnated, on more than one count! (google babe ruth kids, he played baseball, thats from America) Anyway somehow Frinton put on 109 for the first wicket, even after a few drops, one in the Guy Robins!! The cat was the first to break through in the first over of his second spell. The Captain Thomas had decided that the unconventional was required to dismiss this pair. On came the captain himself who dished up some of the finest pies around, some asked was that Boulter, STILL playing for Copdock. Alas, Frinton's pro succumbed to the Chicken and Mushroom full toss, finding Catlow, one of 7 men on the legside boundary. That little cat was definately going to get his milk that night! The captain also proved relatively economical. He took himself out the attack as Sinclair for the first time in a long time refused pie! After a long Discussion it was decided Gauke should come back and surprise the batsman with a leg break. What then happened was possibly my favourite moment of the season to date. With a change of run up, grip, action and even hair colour, Gauke Walked up and bowled a fizzing Leg Break. It drifted it turned and bounced and did for Sinclair Stumped! One must note for accuracy, that Sinclair did set off out of his crease quicker than Usain Bolt and was nearly shaking Gaukes hand when young Gravell whipped the bails off. Even Andrew Burch might have taken the bails off. The match ended quietly as Copdock were clearly not going to restrict their opponents, they went on the hunt for wickets and bonus points. The searing pace of Westaway warranted 4 slips and a gully. Westaway had one Stuart Broad lookalike caught Thomas at 3rd slip and then was supremely unlucky. Burton Ducked an edge in the Gully and Scott Harvey Ran out the way of one at short cover, much to Gravell (A)'s dismay. There was an extra bonus point vanished!

They game was over, Copdock received an old fashioned arse kicking from the team who have now gone top, but as the Frinton Captain said, we had no one called EAST playing and the game was played in an amicable spirit!
