Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 13 runs

Match report Copdock Out-Witted.

On A sunny day a very young team travelled to the glorious surrounds of Witham CC, for some reason we let 3 under 18's travel together without an adult. Unsurprisingly this three were late, i won't name names, but when its ten minutes before the start, you've lost the toss and are bowling, and you're without your Keeper, Opening bowler and first change bowler, its hard not to panic...

As normal the seamers got a bit of tap early on, but this time, didn't pick up their token wicket. So it was left to the spin trio of Gauke, Catlow and Harwood (not arnold Gaukey?!?!?). The cat started attrociously, saying hes got a new technique bla bla bla, bobby flack told me to do this bla bla bla and ended up starting with a farcical 12 ball over. Thank god he stopped and went back to normal and bowled well. Copdock got there first wicket in the 20th over, the captain taking a tremendous diving catch, runnning 20 yards and leaping through the air to catch the ball. Some spectators compared it to Glenn McGrath catching Michael Vaughan at Adelaide in 2002/03. Thus were the memories of his drop the week before banished! Gauke as normal built up the dots with his James East-like slow bowling, not doing anything with it just building pressure, was unlucky to have a catch dropped off him and have countless LBW shouts turned down. Gauke finished his 10 overs for 27, a good return and following him was Harwood, who gave the ball some air and bowled 3 good overs for 21 including taking a wicket doing the batsman in the plentiful flight and having him caught deep mid-wicket, Harry cook making amends. Burch bowled his usual death, Ian Harvey like allsorts and got the key wicket of Facey out for 72, another catch to Thomas. Stevey Catch came back and bowled tremendously, someone said he was a good death bowler! The last over went for 1 and he picked up another bonus point by taking two wickets with yorkers, every point counts in this relegation scrap.

Into tea the Lions went, and what a fine tea it was, warm goodfella's pizza, not just Tesco Value, The captain always appreciates a bit of quality. As a team we probably gave them about 20 runs in the field, through poor fielding.

Out came Thomas and Harvey to open the batting. Thomas set his stall with a blat over cover in the first over. Thomas continued to be severe on anything of a full length, scoring well down the ground. It was growing more and more apparent that Thomas was not fully fit and was struggling with a problem in his right quadracept, his lack of mobility may have cost him, Scott and the team 10-15 runs. He battled on and decided that running was for girls and decided to do his best Matthew Hayden impression and went into Overdrive. When the first wicket fell, the score was 91 of which Harvey had 18. Mark Burch came and went quickly, falling to a good ball from Facey, who bowled his 10 overs for 33. This brought to the crease Sasha Ward, who struggled early on to get Facey away, but looked imperious to every other bowler. It was made harder for Ward as he had to deal with the confusion of Thomas having a runner, one of the strangest experiences of my life. Unfortunately, neither Ward or Thomas managed to see it through with both falling at key times, Thomas Caught on the Long off boundary to a good catch and Ward falling to a sharp bit of keeping down the legside. One gets the impresion had one of these two been there at the end Copdock would have got over the line.
Copdocks Middle and Lower order, though largely inexperienced collapsed like a very thin smoking mans lung on a cold golf course. No one else made double figures, The cat looked like he might do it, with a Westaway like dot, six, out! But alas it wasn't too be, Copdock were a young and inexperienced team, which made the mistakes of a young and inexperienced team, and it showed in the way we lost the game. Next week Mistley at home, who may be without captain Manning!!!
