Match report With three wins out of three under our belts we played host to Wivenhoe CC. Again we fielded a fairly strong side and with skipper Gauke finally winning the toss we batted first.

The track played well and we got underway with a steady start. Banham was first to go chasing one outside off stump. It was somewhat fortuitously caught as wicket keeper and slip combined. Allerton played a solid 23, as did Baker 37. Cuff got off to a sort of start and then popped one back to the bowler. The fun then began. Shorten strolled in and took no time at all setting about the Wivenhoe attack. He was supported well by Gauke and co and together they progressed the score nicely. As Shorten piled on the misery a few Wivenhoe tempers became frayed. By the end Wivenhoe 2nd XI were not a fan of Dave Shorten. Some of the behaviour I witnessed (whilst umpiring) from the visitors was all too familiar and their ill discipline cost them dearly as we reached a total of 257 for 9, Shorten carrying his bat with an unbeaten on 116 well done to him.

Following the between innings festivities we took to the field full of optimism that we could clear Wivenhoe up with such a large total to chase. However Kelly and Dunston had different ideas. Dunston was the pick of the openers and looked class at Div 4 particularly (he had opened the batting in Div 1 for years). They raced to 50 but the introduction of spin slowed the scoring rate and they both held out to catches on the deep. James Druitt and Kevin Banham both bowled exceptionally well, and what followed was a bit dull. Tompkinson sent the ball to sleep with unbeaten 55. The delightful Lucking gave it a bash but Sparrow grabbed a miss timed slap from him at mid off. They slowly reached 200 to boost their points tally for the day and we coasted home to victory.
