Match report Copdock Crusaders Cut Down by Mildenhall

Well the Crusaders made there way to Wamil Way and took on Mildenhall in division one this week. Archie Gravell was missing, due to his skateboarding injury and Sharpe kept his place after a majestic 14 last week. Other than that the side were pretty much at full strength. Mildenhall are a side of decent cricketers and can be very good or very bad…. So after a decent game at the Copdock oval earlier in the season the Crusaders expected a tough game this time around.

Eek won the toss and decided to bat…. Froggy opened up this week with Gerbils. Ben still needs 44 runs for 1000 for the season, the record now looks out of reach, however 1000 runs in a difficult league is a truly excellent effort. The batting has been good all season, with Nelly and Jerv only 50 away from 500 and Pidge only 4 away from 600. It goes to show how this has improved as Jenko topped the runs last year with 496!

Jerv went early for a change…bowled by a barrelesque James Holmes for 4. Sharpe followed after 3 boundaries for 12 and Pidge went soon after, smashing a long hop to mid on for 11. Nelly was then bounced out for his first duck and the Score was 62-4. When Ben, who had looked in no trouble was “ adjudged” LBW for 39, Copdock were struggling on 71-5. This meant that Nose and Hugh “ Teeth “ Thomas were both at the crease without a run to their names.

They both rode their luck early on, in the face of some pretty fierce quick bowling from Mildenhall’s overseas opener and young Mills. In fact Hugh seemed fairly content to hide down the spinners end and leave Nose to face the music. They put on 70 together before Mills took two wickets in two balls…He cleaned bowled Thomas with a ball that swung late, then repeated the trick next ball and cleaned up Jenko! His duck was GOLD, GOLD.

This meant that Aswin came out to bat, at number 9…. And survived a torrid start to his innings. He was pinned second ball by a lifter, then ducked a bumper and then was nearly killed by a beamer.

Aswin and Nose put on 65 in the last few overs and although Ashwin nearly killed him, god that boy’s quick, the closed the innings at 199-7… about 25 short of where they needed to be, but Mildenhall bowled well, their seamers bowled quickly and straight. Nose finished 73 not out and his best display with the bat of the season, Ashwin scored 25 not out and did another excellent job…. And is pushing to bat higher up the order!

So Copdock took to the field and needed a strong showing with the ball to win this one……

Mildenhall got to 40 without losing a wicket and then were 55-4. Nose, Pidge and Eek all chipping in! However young Kulasi from Mildenhall batted out of his skin, and even when Ben came back and took 2 wickets in two balls to mean Mildenhall wobbled and the finish was tight…. The Mildenhall youngster scored 80 not out and saw his side home with one ball to spare, 8 wickets down…

Ok….. Copdock lost, for only the second time this season….. However…. They had their chances to win this game, and with some ease. Two catches dropped, a run out missed…..tells the story of a game that was close… and shouldn’t have been. All in all a disappointing result…. On the bright side, it hasn’t effected the league, as we only need 4 points to win it at home this week to Sudbury.

As always…. The future’s bright…. The future’s Copdock…..

Big night after the game next week!
