Elmstead Grasshoppers v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 25 Apr 2009 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report Copdock travelled to the Mighty Elmstead Grasshoppers for this Div One clash on Saturday. Burch drove, incredible start to the day!! He also took us a new way which proved to be outrageously quick.. this means he's now driving to all away games! Copdock also boasted a new celebrity scorer...It was wonderful to see Stephen Hawkin fully recovered and ready to help Copdock out! Copdock won the Toss and decided to bowl.. given that they had such a long and strong batting line up, even with Sharpe in the side! Ben and Underwood took the new ball, I heard one of the umpires mention he hadn't seen such pace and venom in an opening attack since he visited the West Indies during the 1970's.. he was certainly right as Underwood hurried the batsman at every turn! Ben was unlucky early on and seems to be the bowler that has to bowl both ends at the captain's whim every week. he did an excellent job. The Hoppers made a decent start and made it to 88-1 before Pidge ( played at Lords me) and Eek started to weave their respective webs. Nose took a fine running catch and heard Pidge ask " Is he going to get up??". The Hoppers collapsed, like Nose's lung, to 106-5 and a similar story to the Exning game looked to be unfolding... however with some decent batting and I have to say, Copdock's normally excellent fielding slipped , Elmstead finished on 196-8... probably 30 more than they should have got.. but the pitch was a road!!! Copdcok fancied chasing anything. Eek finished with 5-68 and took the bowling honours, but both Chris and Benny bowled good spells!

The Copdock reply started and Ben shocked everybody by getting off the mark in under 55 balls. However both Ben and Jenko ( still looking scared this season) were adjudged LBW and When Jerv was caught behind from a lifter ( only Jerv was good enough to hit it ) Copdock looked in trouble at 45-3. This is made worse when you realise Reuben was in too.. so basically 45-4. Reuben hit 3 lovely boundaries...but for every one he was dropped in between.. eventually his shocking luck ran out and they caught him for 15...When Nel, last weeks hero was given out LBW ( we got none by the way ) we were 68-5. So Nose and Chris had to rebuild thingas and although Nose could have died any second they added 30 before Nose hit the slowest widest long hop ever bowled in Div One like a missile at mid-wicket..out!! Big Huge T joined Pidge and Copdock thought the game was up as Hugh doesn't really know which way round his bat goes, also he had new shiney pads on..village!! But Huge and Chris added 70 to take the score to 165 before Hugh was LBW ( ANOTHER ONE ) for a superbly crafted 36. Burchy was then out for 0 ( ANOTHER LBW!!!!!! ) and we were 166-8. Eek came in and batted well with Chris to take the score to 181 before chipping to cover for 11. We still needed 16 to win and 15 for the tie...Underwood, shaking with nerves, scuttled out to the middle to join Chris, who was 50 odd not out! Somehow they got to the last over and Chris on strike with 5 to tie, 6 to win... Pidge smashed the first ball to the extra cover boundary, like a hammered short corner....great shot. Then a dot and a conference...he decided to take a single from the next for the tie...Poor decision..As Underwood was all at sea and frankly terrified....The bowler ran in, the field up and pressure on the mentally weak Underwood... he smashed the ball into orbit over mid-wicket, Six..game won.. never in doubt.. Underwood thrives on pressure.. it means nothing to him...A student at the University found the ball on the way to Wivenhoe!!! Huge!!!! 19 Pts... fully deserved.... If we play like that again.. we will lose and only have ourselves to blame.. Eek bowled well..Pidge batted really well as did Hugh... the rest .. well under par and need to have a long hard look at themselves.. I blame Reuben!!!!
