Match report A fantastic effort in the field and with the ball by the Copdock U13's unfortunately was not quite enough to defeat a very strong Wanstead U13's side in the 1/4 of the National U13 Cup.

Having won the toss on a baking hot day in East London, Copdock batted first looking to get runs on the board and put Wanstead under pressure with a run chase. However, a combination of nerves, some good bowling and pressure from the Wanstead side led to Copdock suddenly falling to 8-4 off 5 overs. Not an ideal start. However, Lucas remained unfazed by the situation and kept ticking along trying to establish a partnership. Shaanjeai & Lucas then batted superbly after drinks to increase the run rate with a target of 80/90 thought to be respectable and potentially defendable. The partnership was only broken when Lucas was run out by an outstanding direct hit from backward point. Shaanjeai continued to attack the bowling before having to retire on 32. Freddie finished the innings with a 4 to push Copdock up to 94. A tremendous amount of grit and fight showed by Lucas & Shaanjeai pushed the total to a defendable total.

Early wickets would be key for Copdock to win and Kajeai struck in his first over. However, pace on the ball and width allowed the Wanstead batters to free their arms and hit a few quick boundaries to get ahead of the required rate. The introduction of Shaanjeai offered control and inswing which challenged the batters on what was a far from ideal batting pitch which occasionally bounced and occasionally rolled. At drinks, Wanstead were 72-1 and seemingly racing towards 95. However, after a spirited team talk the Copdock U13's responded brilliantly. Asked to make the Wanstead batters work hard for every run, the lads gave 100% in the field. Lucas came onto bowl and also offered control whilst picking up 2 well deserved wickets. Shaanjeai also picked up a deserved wicket with a ball that swung back into the right hander. The effort given by the team post drinks was summed up with an excellent run out by Shaanjeai at backward point when Wanstead only needed 3 runs to win. Shaanjeai dived, collected the ball and threw it into Jevon who collected and took off the bails. Unfortunately, later in the over Wanstead hit the winning runs to win by 5 wickets.

The Copdock U13's should be immensely proud of themselves for the effort they gave. Some teams could have and would have given up and started to think of the journey home but everyone focused on making it tough for Wanstead. The 11 players that took the field were a credit to themselves and the club and will have learnt a lot from the experience. A team consisting of just 2 Year 8's and 9 Year 7's against a full team of Year 8's performed brilliantly and the performance bodes well for next year and beyond.
