Match report
After a third successive win the team were back together sooner than most would have expected. Despite last year’s Bank Holiday fixture fiasco Ironfist bent the rest of the committee to his will, insisting on another Monday venture this year. With Sexton (understandably) engaged on the typical family bank holiday adventures, Ashwin not available and last minute pull out of Jenko (not the first time he’s benefited from that manoeuvre), changes were required. Archie returned, Steven Gaukins continued, Hugh Teeth Thomas and Tom ‘In The’ Davey made first appearances of the season for the seconds and Reg Hollis was back on the beat. Gnarlled old pro’s Wooton and East managed to swing the Bank Holiday experience too. A strong looking side arrived for a well drilled Thomas warm up, even Scott’s brown shoes failed to put a dampener on events. In an misguided attempt to get out of umpiring this week Scott had left his boots at Brockerly, but rather than return there he opted for Sports Direct after Ironfist won the toss and elected to bat.

Reuben and Gravell started swiftly. A last minute change of bat making no difference to Gravell, a succession of sumptuous cover drives and pulls soon peppering the boundary. Reuben found fluency too and soon the scoreboard was rattling along. The introduction of spin briefly threatened to halt progress but enough 4 balls were on show to keep progress moving. Shortly after 100 was reached a mind blank from Run Out King Reuben saw him heading back to the pavilion, luckily Archie had the good sense to turn his back. Wickets fell after the drinks break as Gravell, Harry Lime Percival, Adam Hopkins came and went and the innings stuttered slightly. Teeth Thomas and Reg Hollis rebuilt the innings before putting the pedal down in the last 10 overs. Hugh eventually went for 48 and Davey and Ironfist found some boundaries too as Reg marshalled the rest to get up to 252 for 8, which looked an imposing total.

A solid spread at tea, included some impressive beef and tomato sandwiches saw Flopdock ready to go, after another inspirational Ironfist pep talk. Wooton had also used the time wisely to cut holes into his new boots. Clearly inspired by the words of Ironfist, Hugh took the new ball and got tanked as did Ironfist himself at the other end. After a couple of looseners Hugh found his line and soon picked up 3 wickets including the ultra aggressive opening batsman who had survived a chance to Ironfist at mid off previously before holing out to long off where our glorious leader made a mends snaffling safely.

The introduction of athletic spin twins East and Steve ‘we don’t Gauke anymore’ saw a slowing of the run rate and soon the writing was on the wall for Brightlingsea. East picked up a couple of wickets as the rate increased and cleverly allowed a single when the ball was tapped back to him at the bowlers end, picking up a wicket the next ball as well as a run out later on when his speed over the ground and ‘gun’ arm were somehow under estimated. Morne Gaukel and Adam Hopkins continued to apply the pressure and even a 12 ball Gravell over which caused sniggering from umpires, players, teammates and spectators alike failed to get Brightlingsea back into the game. Ultimately it was left to Gauke Scratchings to wrap things up with the final wickets.

A decent display and fourth successive win. Copdock march on to next week full of confidence.

Tommy Cooper Blooper, despite competition from Wooton (shoes), Reuben (Run Out King), Gravell (that over) it has to be Ironfist. Bank holiday fixtures. What are you doing?

Brian Lara Tiara - Archie. Brilliant effort.
