Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 51 runs

Match report Winning run comes to an abrupt halt !

In a match that would have looked, on paper, one that Copdock should have won, the 2s came unstuck against a Stowmarket side who belied their lowly position by outperforming us in all aspects.

After losing the toss Stowmarket elected to bat first on a very dry wicket. Despite the loss of an early wicket, a super delivery from Ashwin which castled Blake, the top order were very positive, taking full advantage of a number of loose deliveries. Hodge bowled a tidy spell from the bottom end but it was not long before spin was introduced from both ends in the shape of Sam the man Handley and Patrick Paddy Young. As the spin twins got into their rhythm the run rate started to fall and wickets were picked up at regular intervals. Both bowled long spells and, with a fast outfield and a batting side intent on pushing hard they kept control well.
It was only in the last 8 or so overs that the run rate picked up again and Stowmarket added probably 25 runs more than at one time looked likely.
Tea was taken in a positive mood as the target of 223 still looked within our capabilities, even accounting for the pitch which had already started to show signs of wear.
Unfortunately, this optimism was soon shown to be somewhat misplaced as Stow captain, Sirimanne, gave a master class in bowling off spin on a turning pitch. Bowling a challenging line he gave the batsmen nothing. Batter after batter failed to come to terms with his bowling and, with the other opening bowler, Finbow, also picking up a couple of wickets, it was not long before the Dock were 47/6 and then 59/7 !
It was at this point that thoughts of victory changed to just trying to bat through the remaining overs to give the score some respectability. Fortunately the two batters at the crease, coach Taylor and Paddy Young both exhibited some great fighting spirit to move the score onto about 140 until Soggy was adjudged LBW.
Paddy continued to farm the strike and went on to complete an excellent half century, helping the team collect a couple of batting points along the way.
So a very disappointing defeat but on this occasion it was the best team on the day that won.

There were still a number of positives to take from the game:
* We had the youngest bowling attack I imagine there has possibly ever been with all of the bowlers used well under 20 years.
* Fielding and general energy was good
* The batting of Paddy Young and Soggy

So - we now face a simply must win match against Mistley next Saturday at Ipswich School. Defeat is not an option.

Are we up for the fight ?
