Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Sunday XI v Mistley on Sun 13 Jun 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 19 runs

Match report Having won the PDQ league last season, Mistley were always going to be tough opposition and a tight game seemed inevitable – so it proved. Showing only a couple of changes from their normal Two Counties Div One team Mistley were certainly formidable opponents for the more “diverse” Copdock side...

With the normal PDQ captain unavailable (surfing in Newquay!!!), VC Gauke was once again in charge of the troops. Unbelievably he won the toss and made the easy decision to bat first. Sasha Ward opened up with Reuben and right from the start looked incredibly impressive. Due to school and county games this was his first appearance for the Club this season but there is no doubt the guy can play...I mean really play...

Reubs was obviously out for single figures and it was left to James East and Sasha to lay the foundation for the innings. As ever, Nose kept finding the gaps and Sasha just looked class. They put on an excellent 100 (ish) run partnership at a good rate before Nose clearly got fed up being outplayed by the young ‘un and chose to run him out!! No chance for Ward, terrible call – shame on you East.... Fortunately Nose did go some way to making amends for this by going onto compile an excellent 68. He was ably support by Jamie Green, but when then they were both dismissed it looked like the innings was going to stall. However, some lusty hitting by Shorten and Hugo Gravell (including one memorable pull shot – CRACK!!), got things back on track and we eventually reached 220 for 9 at the end of our 40 overs.

On a pitch as good as this one we figured this was probably about a par score, but runs on the board counts for a lot. The powerful Mistley batting line up started well with Butcher, Manning and Dias all scoring quickly. Nose bowled a good opening spell and was well supported by Underwood but none of the bowlers could stem the run flow. At the half way point the comparable scores were pretty similar but the feeling was that Mistley were well on top. However, things can change quickly... Gauke’s 3rd over saw Butcher trapped LBW 68, and the very next ball Dias run out for 27. This meant two new batsmen at the crease and inevitably the run rate started to climb. Oliver Gravell bowled an excellent spell and was well supported East and Gauke. Nose topped off a fine allround performance with brilliant figures of 2-24 and Gauke picked up a couple of cheap wickets to finish with 4-33. Dave Shorten also did a superb job behind the stumps. Although we bowled Mistely out in 38 overs and won by 19 runs the game was much much closer than this result suggests.

This was a great victory for Copdock and a fine advert for the PDQ league. Two decent teams, a high standard of cricket and a close game played in a good spirit. The challenge now is to maintain this form in the weeks to come...
