Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Long Melford on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 100 runs

Match report A fine team performance resulted in the 2s achieving their fourth consecutive win, and thanks to the weather we are now unbeaten for 7 weeks!!

On yet another Copdock belter we won the toss and chose to bat. Sogwag began in his normal aggressive manner and was unlucky when a full blooded drive smashed mid off in the chest only to rebound comfortably into the fielders grasp. This brought Mark Burch to the crease and he and Jamie Green laid the foundation for our innings.

Batting all but two of our allotted 45 overs Jamie compiled an excellent 75. This was his fifth 2nd XI 50 of the season and he is within reach of 500 runs for the year – a brilliant return for a debut season. Jamie’s innings allowed all the other batters to play around him and Burchy took full advantage of this. Playing fluently from the outset he hit a brisk 51 (his fourth 50 in just 9 innings) before smashing a wide long hop straight to mid off. Another great knock - the challenge now is for him to go on to reach the elusive three figures...

With Mark gone it was down to the experienced middle order of Baker, Shorten and Wootton to increase the run rate. Ted did his bit with a quick 24, but when Shorts (6) and Wootton (0) both failed to get going it looked like the innings was in danger of stalling. Underwood had other ideas. Batting the only way he knows how he smashed 33* in no time. At this point Jamie also put his foot down and ultimately we finished on what looked like an over par 234. Good work the batters.

Strengthened by the return of Steve Catchpole the Copdock opening bowlers soon set about their business. Underwood has had a great season with the ball, and Stevie Catch is just a freak – I swear he could not play for a couple of years and first game back immediately hit the perfect line and length!! The Long Melford openers tried to be aggressive, employing the “plenty of room in the air” philosophy. However, a cunningly set “in/out” field soon paid dividends when Catchpole enticed Whitehart into another attempted big hit and he was brilliantly caught by Druitt at long off. Running in at full pace, taking the ball just inches off the ground Drez undoubtedly took one of the catches of the season. Out!!

It is rare to see a catch of this quality in Div 4, and rarer still to see an even better one taken just a few overs later!! This time it was the ever influential Baker that that held onto an absolute screamer. Fielding at long on, he had to sprint back at maximum pace before grabbing the ball at full stretch over his shoulder - possibly the hardest catch in cricket to take it was a real stunner. If it had not been for Dave Shorten’s new dog pulling Shorts completely off his chair when enjoying a post match beer, Ted’s catch would definitely have won the champagne moment!!

With the top order batsmen gone Long Melford were never really in the game. Underwood, Catchpole and Catlow all took 3 wickets and a convincing 100 run victory was secured. If we continue to play like this there is no reason our winning streak should not continue. Mathematically it is still possible for the 2s to get promoted...
