Scorecard

Exning II v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 24 Jul 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 115 runs

Match report A slightly bizarre game of cricket resulted in the 2s picking up 20 points with our 3rd consecutive win...

Winning the toss (again!!), Copdock opted to bat first on what looked a decent track. This, combined with a fast outfield and one short square boundary, meant plenty of runs looked on offer. However, all of the Copdock batsmen managed to get themselves in and out without anyone playing a really significant innings – seven players scored between 16 and 32..!! The major highlights of the innings was Mark Burch celebrating his first ever “6” in any form of cricket (equalling the record of his father) as if he had just scored a match winning Ashes hundred at Lords... Still it was one more thing to cross off the to-do list!!

Burchy’s big hitting seemed to inspire the rest of the team as 5 other Copdock batsmen also recorded maximums on the way to us reaching 213 at the end of our 45 overs. To be honest, I thought this was probably 20 runs below par...

The Exning innings then got off to an absolute flier. Sogwag and Underwood took the new ball and I think it would be fair to say the first 4 or 5 overs were complete dross. Half volley, followed by long hop, followed by full toss, followed by short and wide was not what we were looking for as the Exning skipper (Wood) smashed it everywhere for a quickfire 30 odd. After about 5 overs the score was on 40 for 0 and Drezza had been given the nod for an early bowl. However, at this point a cunning Underwood leg side half volley was hammered straight to mid-wicket by Wood where Wheato hung onto an excellent catch. Out!!

This one ball completely changed the match. From then on Gunders and Soggy both bowled exceptionally well and ran through the Exning batting line up in no time. Underwood suddenly found his line and length and aided by some further good catching picked up an excellent 5 wicket haul. Sogs started to bowl straight and was rewarded with 2 lbw decision on his way to claiming 3 wickets. Exning lost 6 or 7 wickets in the space of a dozen or so overs and it was only some good late hitting from Steele that got them up to 98!!

So, in the end a very comfortable win and 20 good points. The Div 4 table is incredibly tight and there is lot to play for in the 2nd half of the season. Roll on St Margarets next week...
