Woolpit II v Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 17 Apr 2010 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets

Match report The season could not have got off to a better start; the weather was glorious, the Woolpit ground looked a picture, Cuff was unavailable, Scotty Wootton did not chunder and we won by 10 wickets!! Who can ask for more...

Despite missing Cuffy and Ted Baker (even someone as "influencial" as him has no control over volcanic ash!!), the team proved far too strong for a depleted Woolpit.

Obviously Copdock lost the toss and, on what looked an excellent track, Woolpit understandably chose to bat. With the conditions undoubtedly favouring the batting side, Copdock were pretty happy to have restricted them to about 40 for 5 of 30 overs!! Ethan Wright set the tone with a fast, accurate and hostile opening spell - there is no doubt he will be pushing hard for a regular 1st team place this year.

Ethan was superbly backed up by both Steve (who needs nets) Catchpole and Graham (depsite appearances I am younger than Oliver) Underwood. The Woolpit batsmen simply could not get the ball of the square - their first boundary came in the 20th over!

Drezza and Catlow ensured the pressure was maintained throughout and with the help of some outstanding fielding (led by Hugo, the Cat, Ethan and Mark Burch) Woolpit were finally bowled out in the last over of their innings for just 105.

An excellent tea followed with Scott having to face some tough questioning about last weeks disgraceful behaviour - I strongly recommend you mind where you step if you happen to be near the Fish 'n Chip shop in Kesgrave...

And then the fun started...

Hugo Gravell and Kevin Banham opened the batting, no-one else was required and 20 overs later the game was over...!! After a careful start Hugo soon found his timing and smashed it everywhere. He finished on a simply brilliant 83 not out scoring all round the wicket and completely dominated the Woolpit bowling. At the other end Banham batted slower than a Boulter delivery, but it did not matter - a convincing victory was secured.

No doubt there will be plenty of tougher and tighter matches to come, but this was an excellent start to the season. Roll on next week..
