Match report Copdock's Kids Win In Style!

Copdock lost the toss and ended up in the field, with a young team, which only had 3 members over 20! The teenagers started well in the field, with Sharp getting 2 early wickets and Sshhhh it's a, managed to coax the Wivenhoe opener, who was looking good, into playing allround a straight full toss! In the middle overs it was left to the Cat and Steve "Onion" Gauke who once again bowled a miserly spell, of 10 overs for 24, good work big man. However two players had batted well through this and it was left to Thomas to break the partnership. He did. He bowled quite possibly the best delivery in the history of the game of cricket. Bamboozling the batsman, Morgan in the flight after the bounce and in his foolhardy haste, Morgan tried to smash it into Belstead, and managed to hit it all of a yard, straight into Hugo Gravell's mitts, OUT! Spectators were heard to have said it was the longest of all hops. Thomas broke through again with his variation ball the chest high full toss, much to Gauke's dismay. Catlow and Sharp returned well, and kept Wivenhoe down to 166, a good effort allround.

Copdock (and OI) got off to a flier, going at 6 an over for the first ten, although for the loss of two wickets. Thus bringing to the crease, on debut, the 13 year old James Hodgkinson, who made a quite superb 30 guiding the side from 65 to 143, a marvellous effort showing strength of character and resolve, a fine prospect for the future. Hodgkinson batted with Richardson who flayed a rapid 21 and Catlow who made a battling 18. Catlow particuarly enjoyed winding up the Wivenhoe opening bowler, then hooking him over fine leg for six, whilst laughing in his face, just you wait for the return fixture kid...(on a hard bouncy one at wivenhoe? i don't think so!) Eventually Gauke and Thomas Snr on debut for the club, made a battling two(97 balls) leaving well and missing lots of cut shots. Comparisons to Colin Cowdrey were even mentioned, I'd imagine they were just reminded of the times Cowdrey had a towel tucked down his shirt as a chest guard... Gauke knocked it around until Cowdrey picked out first slip, an unlucky way to go. Sshhhh its a came to the crease needing 6 to win. There were howls from the sidelines, some couldnt watch. The pair managed a 3 singles, before Gauke launched into a full blooded cut which pulled up 2 inches inside the boundary, to everyones amazement, he ran a 3! Outrageous, no one at the start of the day could have predicted a Gauke 3 to win the match! A tremendous effort all round and thanks go to those who made themselves available at the last minute. To those who think you can't win anything with kids, well your wrong, even young Finn Sharpe was trying to oust his father from the team, looking keen for a game. Perhaps Finn could take the new ball on Saturday.
