Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Boxted on Sat 04 Jul 2009 at 1.00pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report With the Government’s level 2 heat wave still warming the tarmac of the Old London Road, a balmy day’s cricket at The Copdock Oval was on the cards. The ground was its usual picture-perfect self, and the off-white road surface out in the middle was showing no signs of meltdown, after the week’s battering from the sun. The Onion strode to the middle with his Boxted counterpart, who called correctly and had his pads on before you could say Shrek. Signposts for the Antiques Fair had been erected a day early, which were unfairly accurate of the opening attack of The Copdock G Force. A bare knuckle fight was narrowly avoided and Gunders bowed to his elder partner for choice of ends. After 11 overs, The Onion made a petty, yet brilliant decision to relieve Gravell of his Werthers Originals, and the hostility he unleashed on the Boxted batsmen was rewarded almost instantly. A flick of the off bail saw No.1 go, and after the inevitable slow bouncer, a full ball outside off stump drew the dangerous No.3 into a flashing drive. A thick snick was whistling towards 1st slip, where the Skipper had installed himself. Small Wooton noticed it was only a snick and not a Snicker. Fearing the lack of confectionary would leave his captain uninterested in the catch, he flew to his right, and snaffled a textbook grab inches from the ground. It proved to be an inspiration, as No.4, also a dangerous player, was drawn to the flame of Gravell’s white hot bowling, like a small, helpless Madagascan Sunset Moth, and could do nothing but edge to Pipkin Banham at 2nd slip.

The 96 year old opening pair was beginning to tire under the now relentless sun, and The Cat, having grown bored of rubbing himself around the legs of the square leg umpire, started to wheel in from the top end. Every now and again he’d pitch one, which would turn into the hands of slip, but the fun was to be from the other end. Vettori Druitt unleashed an array of balls in his first over, most of them rubbish! But as the saying goes, “it takes wickets”, and every now and again the white flag would pop up from the opposite end and Drez was on his way to a “five for”. KB was introduced to entice the bunnies with his carrots, but the visitors dragged themselves to 168 before an LBW was finally forthcoming.

The Skipper surveyed the tired and sun weary souls pawing at the tea table, and assessed that at least part of the Geriatric Twosome should open with the bat as well, before the need for Ralgex and Bisodol became too confusing!

KB and Gunders strode out, and although the latter was to miss the boat, once Ted Can’t Hear You Baker replaced him, the target was slowly but surely reduced. Although the sun had clearly got to Bakes, as asking Stuart Underwood for his guard did seem a little queer. 38-1 from 10 became 103-1 from 20, with the only concerns in the clubhouse coming from Mrs B as to her husband’s health and fluid intake.

Ted floundered with 22 required, and was soon followed by “I Want That One”. The things some people will do to ensure they’re the centre of attention! After his usual irreverent look at the mediocre bowling on offer, the total was reached by The Dognapper with the only six of the day off the last ball of the 31st over.

All over by 6pm, and another 20 points in the Good fight against Communism! Who’s coming to Woolpit????
