Match report Copdock U13 V Battisford U13
Suffolk Cup
05 June 2008
Enjoying some much needed sunshine over the ground Copdock played host to the quarter final of the Suffolk Cup. After so much heavy rain the ground was always going to be soft underfoot but Rick did an amazing job in preparing a wicket to allow the game to go ahead on grass. This was an opportunity for the teams to play on a difficult wicket and that proved to be the case.
Winning the toss Chris decided to bat and confidence was high as Jamie and Chris Wildig went out to face the opening over’s. By the close of the first over with only 2 runs on the board we had lost the valuable wicket of Jamie, the first of what was to be many to follow. With our opening batsman falling steadily it was down to captain, Chris Baron to steady the ship and hit a fine 31 before retiring.
Only Toby could offer any resistance to a spell of fine swing bowling from Henry Cutting that produced 4 wickets. With an array of extras gifted from the remaining bowlers a combined total of 107 was reached. It would remain to be seen if this total was sufficient to defend?
A combined opening spell of 4 over’s saw Tom and Toby restrict the visitors to just 11 runs, with a change of bowling the score preceded to 30 off 6 0vers for the loss of 1 wicket. An array of bowling from across the side saw the score move on before Jack, Tom and Toby collected 1 wicket each. But the night once more was to be Brendan’s with 3 wickets for just 3 runs, an excellent spell of bowling off just 2 over’s.
With the score on 93 a tense end was guaranteed going into the last over, Michael was presented the ball and a truly exhilarating over of cricket followed. With miss fields gifting runs the score ticked over and a defeat became a real possibility. But the pendulum swung back into our favour with a run out and stumping in quick succession. With 10 runs added of the last over Battisford closed on 103 for 9 missing out by 4 runs.
Copdock had pulled off a thrilling victory to put them through to the semi final of the Suffolk Cup, an achievement to be proud of!
Learning points of the night surely are to keep the ball on the ground with so many wickets falling to good catches in the field, as well as batting on such a tricky surface. Our coach will surely address these issues and in true form shown by our lads feel confident lessons will be learnt.
In closing many thanks to Adrian, Tom, Godric, Henry, Rick and especially Soo for all their help on the night, it is much appreciated.
