Match report Match Report
Copdock U13 V Ipswich CC U13
9 June 2008
Going into this match on an unbeaten run of 4 matches, expectations were high that another result could be obtained. As ever Rick had performed miracles to ensure the wicket and ground were presented to us and our visitors in excellent condition.
Going for the toss Felix lost out and it was the decision of Ipswich to bat first, this making it the first time Copdock would need to bat second and chase the posted score down. Tight opening bowling kept the score pegged back to an acceptable rate, on average just 4 per over. It was with a change of bowling though the only success with the ball came. Brendan bowling his first over of the night bowled young Jamie for 6 runs. With no more wickets falling Ipswich went about adding to the score steadily and in times enjoying some quite fruitful over’s producing high yielding runs. There was at times nervousness about our fielding and this led to a dropped catch and several miss-fields adding to the overall score. Ipswich’s Cameron and Ben turned in notable performances both retiring on 32 and 33 respectively.
At the close of the innings on a slow pitch a score of 116 was posted for the loss of just 1 wicket.
Copdock needing 117 to win opened their batting and with the score on just 9 saw the wicket of Chris Wildig fall. Like us this proved to be the only success Ipswich also enjoyed with the ball, reiterating just how the surface was playing on the night.
Felix Ward batting at 3 after having to retire as wicket keeper raced to an unbeaten 31 before retiring. And this was followed by a credible solid 30 by Will and 30 by Jamie, having patently built up his confidence following his dismissal against Battisford, a very well done Jamie.
Supporting these massive innings were Chris Baron (5) and Callum Harris (0) both not out.
It was with the first ball of the 17 over that our batsman hit the winning run that saw Copdock win this match by 9 wickets.
The first run chase of the season had ended and our batsman had showed the courage and determination to bat consistently to see the team home for its 5th straight win of the season.
Learning points on the night came down to fielding generally, and the necessity to back up at all times. On a quicker pitch more runs would have been conceded and in conjunction with no balls could have made the score significantly harder to obtain.
My thanks go to Will for stepping in and replacing Felix, following an injury to his hand and producing a quality display behind the stumps. To Rick for the preparation of the ground, Neil for setting up and packing away, Godric and Adrian for umpiring and especially Ann for scoring.
As ever your help is very much appreciated.
