Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Mildenhall II on Sat 20 May 2017 at 1pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 85 runs

Match report After last week’s demolition of IES at Chantry Park the Two-saders returned to the Copdock Oval, with toilet paper a plenty to welcome Mildenhall 2nds. Wooton was replaced by Cuff and Sexton replaced Jenkin who’s buffet was required in the first team.

An overcast day greeted the teams and after the Old ‘uns comprehensively outplayed the young ‘uns in the pre match football Ironfist won the 5th consecutive toss and, to the delight of his team elected to bat. Dave Hale’s Bunny gleefully accepted an invitation to open up with Sharpe. Both were asked some questions by a youthful Mildenhall team who found good line and lengths. Eventually Percival was dismissed by a good one and soon Run Machine Storey was also trudging back to the hutch courtesy of a generous LBW decision. Sharpe briefly excelled outside the off stump with some scintillating cuts and drives before missing a straight delivery and Copdock looked to be teetering as the run shy Nose joined Chilean Wonderboy Hollis at 60 for 3. As thoughts of a Flopdock collapse were allayed however as Reg and Copdock’s Philpott scampered between the wickets and began finding boundaries with some well-timed drives and the odd scythe through the offside. Nose was given a life just before he reached his 50 in a rare blip from the Mildenhall fielders whose ground fielding in particular was excellent. After edging past the 100 partnership Nose ran himself out but at 161 for 4 with 7 overs left 220 looked on the cards. Things went downhill from here however. Soon the middle order were returning to the hutch quicker than appeared possible and Ironfist himself was nearly timed out as Leggett fell for a duck. As Copdock limped tamely into the last over it was left to East JR to keep up his usually impressive strike rate and disappoint those who were hoping for a 0* (and one in the duck bat tally) by popping his only ball for four over mid-off. Chokedock finished at 190 for 9, overall a decent total on a pitch starting to offer some turn and against a good fielding unit, but short of where looked possible with 10 overs to go and Hollis and East (older, uglier) well set.

Mildenhall maintained the momentum early in the innings, scoring both sides of the wicket off Captain Calamity and the usually metronomic Nose. When a break for rain came after only 6 overs Mildenhall had cruised to 29 without loss and 190 looked less impressive by the ball. After the rain break however young Dan Leggett produced the spark that the team had been waiting for. After Nose palmed a gentle one over the bar at point Lego managed to induce an edge and the flying Wonderboy snaffled a great catch behind to go with his excellent half century. East JR soon removed the experience Squire courtesy of the safe hands of Leggett and now an end was opened. Replacing Leggett, Nose was soon strolling through the open door, reminding most who were at East Bergholt, of their own dangerman Philpotts. Once Scarff pouched Graham off the bowling of East JR it looked only a matter of time before victory was secured. Nose mopped up a few cheap ones, Cuff held a diving one hander at slip of East the Younger and soon the final wicket fell to East JR, again well held by Scarfface in the outfield and Flopdock were victors by 85 runs.

Ultimately a good win which puts us in the mix, though harder work than it could have been. The impetus provided by Dan Leggett after the platform was built by Sharpe, Hollis and Nose.

Sombrero – Dan Leggett, game changer

SC strawberry – Nose for that poor dropped catch.
