Match report A ten-man Cardinals team travelled to Yoxford for this first round tie in the Suffolk Cup. The Skipper was Dillon Hatcher. Cardinals lost the toss and were put into bat, with rain predicted for later in the evening. Many thanks to Andy Millions and Tom Offord who agreed to share umpire duties and Carl Hatcher who scored (again!).
George Offord and Dan Leggett opened the batting. The score was 20 in the fourth over when Leggett holed out to cover on 8. Next man in was Harry Reddington, and the pair moved the total past 50 in the ninth, although Reddington was out on the next ball caught for 14. James Doig then joined Offord in the middle. At the halfway point, the score was 69 for 2, and then Doig was bowled for 16 with the score on 80. Joseph Clifford was next man in, and by the end of the 13th the score was 84 for 3. The ton came up in the 16th , and with two overs to go the score was 117. Offord’s impressive 50 came up in the 19th and he was replaced by Lewis Millions for the last seven balls of the innings. The Cardinals’ total was 139 for 3, with Clifford undefeated on a speedy 25 and Millions not out 1.
Ollie Stace opened the bowling for the Cardinals and bowled out batsmen with his first two balls. Finn O’Reilly opened from the other end. Stace got another wicket in his second over, and Yoxford were 18 for 3 at the end of the third. Stace got his fourth wicket with his first ball of the 5th , and Yoxford were 27 for 4 at the end of the over. There was a run out in O’Reilly’s next over, and Yoxford were 38 for 5 at the end of the 6th . It looked like it might be an early finish, but Yoxford rallied and some rain began to fall.
Ollie Mexome nabbed a wicket in the 9th , the batsman putting up a catch to Millions at mid-off, which was well taken. At the end of the 10th , the score was 64 for 6, so Yoxford were only five behind us in spite of the early fall of wickets. If they could get ahead of the run rate and rain caused an abandonment, then victory would be theirs. The 7th and 8th wickets fell in the 11th , both bowled by Mexome. Stace came back for the 13th , at the end of which Yoxford had moved on to 91, and this was followed by a tidy over from Millions. O’Reilly then came back and picked up the 9th wicket. At the end of the 17th , Yoxford were 101 for 9. Leggett bowled the 18th at the end of which Yoxford were 113 for 9, needing 27 off the last two overs. The 19th over was bowled by Hatcher, and a run-out finished the innings with Yoxford 115 all out.
