Match report Dragons Off to a Flying Start

A great start to the seasons for the Dragons who ran out as victors by 70 runs on home turf (ground looking great as ever) thanks to a very competent performance in every area of the game.

Batting first, we started well with Lucas H finding the boundary several times and then built our innings steadily throughout, surviving a hiccup with two wickets in three balls early on, but only losing one more wicket after that. Calling and running between the wickets was good from every pair (no run-outs for the first time I can remember in an U11 match), with top scorer Dylan, Oli Jay, Oli Cannon and captain Sam all chipping in with boundaries.

After refreshments (thanks Karen), captain Sam lead us back on to the field, with brave volunteer Kit Beasley taking the gloves for the first time ever. The Dragons were a dream to coach, with the boys encouraging each other, adjusting the field positioning, moving-in, backing-up and keeping hold of the ball when necessary: I didn’t have to nag once, just stand back and admire, whilst the boys themselves suggested some fielding skills we can work on, during our post-match debrief.

Bowling was strong all round with nine wickets (including three great catches) shared amongst the bowlers: two each for Dylan, Sam and Louis Cannon and wicket maidens for Sam and Oli Jay.

Thanks to all the parents who helped out on the night: including James with the scoresheet (sorry about those seven ball overs!), Peter with the stones, Karen with the food and drink and our match manager Mark Henson for arranging. Thanks also to all the boys taking their turns fielding for East Bergholt to make up the numbers.

Many thanks also to East Bergholt for a match played in a great spirit throughout, braving the cold and agreeing to a 20 over a side match.
