Match report Cardinals v Woolpit CC U15s – Suffolk Cup Semi-final – Tuesday 7 June 2016

Cardinals (186 for 6) beat Woolpit (109 for 4) by 77 runs

Many thanks to Pete Reddington for umpiring, Carl Hatcher for scoring and Sam O’Reilly for doing the drinks.

Bucking their recent trend, Copdock won the toss and elected to bat. At the Copdock Oval, on a dry outfield with relatively short boundaries, it was always going to be important to score at 8 plus an over, and so Jacob Marston and Harry “the pinch-hitter” Reddington opened the batting. Unfortunately Reddington was bowled in the 2 nd over for 5. Dan Leggett was next in and by the end of the 5 th , the score was 34 for 1. Marston accelerated and reached his 50 in the 10 th , when he was replaced by Luke Froggatt, and by the end of the over the score had moved to 92. Leggett was out caught for 20 and was replaced by Skipper Ollie Stace. In the 14 th over Froggatt was out caught for 15 and next man in was George Offord. Stace was out caught for a quick 36. He was replaced by Finn O’Reilly who unfortunately was out without scoring, and next man in was Ollie Mexome. At the end of the 17 th , the score was 155 for 17. Offord was out for 3. Dillon Hatcher was in next. At the end of the innings, Copdock’s score was 186, with Mexome not out on a swift 25 and Hatcher undefeated on 8. The Cardinals had achieved their aim of setting a competitive target and now needed to back it up in the field.

Froggatt and Stace opened the bowling for Copdock, and Woolpit made a spritely start clocking up 36 for no wicket by the end of the 5 th . O’Reilly bowled the 6 th and Offord the 7 th . Hatcher was introduced into the attack. The scoring rate slowed and Woolpit were 67 without loss at the end of the 10 th . The first wicket went down in the 11 th , a sharp direct hit run-out by Froggatt. On the next ball, the other opener was out clean bowled by Offord. At the end of the 12 th , the score was 78 for 2 of 2. In spite of some “interesting” field placings, by the end of the 15 th Woolpit had been contained on 89. Hatcher bowled the 16 th , taking a wicket, caught Stace, off his first ball. Byron Evans and Tom Hammond then bowled a tidy last four overs, and Woolpit’s final score was 109 for 4, representing a comfortable 77 run victory for the Cardinals.
