Match report U11 Dragons Run Out of Puff in Cup Final

Having won all of their League and Cup matches to date this season, a team of eight Dragons arrived at a sunny Mildenhall for the Suffolk U11 Cup Final, with a reasonable degree of confidence, despite the fearsome reputation of their hosts on home turf.

Captain Will Bailey lost the toss and we were put into bat on a very green wicket on the edge of the square. Our first pair Oli Mann and Varun Sharma made a bright start, making a net total of 19 in their four overs, with the loss of just one wicket. This is when we had an inexplicable mid-order collapse of England proportions, which effectively put paid to the match, with our next two batting pairs losing a total of nine wickets between them and the score going backwards to 203 for 10 after the first 12 overs. Although our final pair of Will Bailey and Kajeai amassed a score of 22 off the final four overs, our grand total of 225 was never going to be enough.

However, taking the field with nothing to lose, the Copdock boys performed bravely and creditably, with the Mildenhall score going backwards after the first over of fierce bowling from Kajeai and a memorable over from Oli Mann taking two wickets from two balls after a good team run-out in the same over. Despite a couple of missed catching chances, the bowling and fielding was solid and spirited and with another wicket from Isaac Toombs and a near faultless display from Ewan behind the stumps, the hosts had only reached 216 for 5 at the halfway point of their innings, bringing that hope of a miracle a bit closer. However, Mildenhall’s last two batting pairs steadied the ship, realising that they could just block the good balls and wait for the odd wider ball to score off. Once their total had passed Copdock’s meagre 225, caution was thrown to the wind with a hatful of wickets now required to win, Mildenhall plundered our final overs of bowling and eased to victory.

Overall Mildenhall were well worth their victory margin of 47 in this low scoring match, with a special mention to Josh James and A.Tucker with the ball and Connor Cobbold and Toby Steggles with the bat, leaving the defeated Dragons to return eastward to lick their wounds and think of next year.
