Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club 2nd XI v Long Melford on Sat 26 Jul 2008 at 2pm
Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report The 2nd XI season rocks on in the right direction and it would appear a fair wind has set in. I don’t wish to spell disaster but what happened this week may not be repeated for many a year.

Long Melford stand in captain, Mr I like jelly babies Wright one the toss (of course) and into the blazing sun we ventured. The only thing preventing Capt Gauke being knifed in the back is that no one had a long enough blade to reach a vital organ.

Our bowlers performed very well. Underwood and Olbas Oil kicked off and it wasn’t long before success was had. The first change came with Catcpole returning to the side having had a week off. It was evident that Stevie (possibly the nicest bloke at the club) even more so than Baker, had spent a week in the sun, drinking pints of vodka from the cleavage of his girlfriend. He was awful! I say this as an advocate of Stevie’s ability – better luck next week. The developing duo of Druitt 4 for 54 and Banham then kicked in. Druitt turned it square whilst Banham might aswell have used a tennis ball. But a good all round bowling and fielding effort leaving us with 198 to chase.

Our opening partnership of Boughton and Allerton got us off to a wonderful start. They managed to score 12 between them in as many overs. Boughton returned to the pavilion to declare he didn’t feel quite all there in the middle. No shit Sherlock! To be fair the top 5 were all poor. I personally thought it was all over and was hoping that teams in the top four all lost. But then something extraordinary developed in front our very eyes. This was a Copdock fight back like no other I had seen. Scott Wootten got his chance and Yee Gads he took it. He played a controlled hard hitting innings, running hard and fast between the stumps and choosing his shots well, he pushed the score on quickly. The pick of his shots being his forearm jab over mid off for 6. He was unfortunately run out on 65 following a direct throw from the boundary that tipped off a bail. It was a well deserved innings Scotty and well done! Catchpole and Underwood of course supported him magnificently. Young Olbas Oil was also truly magnificent as he stuck to his guns and deserved a well earned 21 not out. The mood became very tense as the scores became ever closer. We lost our 9th wicket that of Catchpole with some work still to do to secure victory. Druitt joined Oily in the middle and played a truly majestic on drive for four. He treated the bowling with contempt and bought the scores level with one ball left. As the field closed in the batsmen conferred. I looked up to the sky and saw Chewy smiling down on us and knew we would secure victory. The ball was bowled and Druitt smashed it for 6 over midwicket. Good job he didn’t miss it, cos a prod forward with a quick sprint would have done. Nonetheless well done you boys - we’re now top of the league!
