Match report The 2nd XI with two more young debutants Jonny ‘Morris’ Rice and Lewis ‘F1’ Catlow turned up at Long Melford in fighting spirit. Paddington lost the toss again and we bowled.

The two dependable opening bowlers Catchpole and Underwood did their thing and managed to winkle out a couple of early scalps. This lead the way for young Catlow to turn his young left arm from the Pavilion end. A slight built well spoken young chap did us proud. He spin and spun, dipped and dazzled the opposition and turned in figures of 12-2-48-4. Damn good going. Still on probation to see if you can drink lager with the best of us however.

Among a faultless fielding display where all 4 catches were held we managed to take wickets at important times and harnessed Melford’s score to 179. The only moment of controversy being when I had to wipe marmalade from the ball after Paddington had snaffled one at slip.

After a lovely tea, the batting commenced. Soggy (still injured) opened up and looked in good form. He was done on 12 by a straight one, as was young Harvey 4. On came Rice. He managed only 8 and then his unmanageable mullet took over, knocked him off balance and he to, played around a straight one.

It was left to Banham and Cuff to steady the ship. Hoisting the Jolly Roger we stuck our ground. I giggled as Banham struggling with his timing, almost summoned son Archie for a quick lesson on the cut shot. Not to worry however we knocked off the runs Cuff 73, Banham 28 and a good 30 from Allerton to finish off. The bear had a mare. He looked utterly disappointed at missing the slowest straightest ball in cricket history. But took delight in the knowledge that waiting for him only 150 yards away was a honey flavoured lager. Well done us all!
