Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won by 95 Runs (incomplete scorecard)

Match report Well yet again Copdock made the journey to Dog poo park to take on IES. In our favourite fixture of the season, a local derby as some people see it, I don’t!

Having enjoyed a net at the ground and an excellent warm up on the carpet like outfield, Copdock felt ready for the off. However Eek lost the toss and we were inserted on what looked like the best wicket produced at IES for many seasons. Reuben Sharpe and Jenko opened up and Sharpe was surprisingly bowled for a duck in the first over. He got a send off, a theme that would continue through out the innings. Oh joy. It did however provide me with my funniest moment of the day as I turned to see Jenko’s dad, just looking down and shaking his head as Sharpe trudged off! Genius.

Tom Davey, after a good run of scores, was promoted to number three. He looked in great form and was eventually caught at square leg. I was amazed that in the score book it said he had a 24 ball duck! Ouch!

Jerv, in his last game ever, and Jenko steadied the ship and put on 40 –odd. Jenko continued his good form and without somebody above medium pace to be scared of, plundered runs with his drive, cut and pull.

Jerv fell shortly after and then Chris, I played at Lords, was caught on the boundary by some sort of wonder catch, which got the same reaction from the IES boys as any catch Reuben manages. This meant Nose was in and he got a friendly reception from the lads, which was nice. Jenko was then out, intimidated by the chat, he threw his wicket away, caught behind for the 22nd time this year, for a well crafted 69 and Brad Willis took his place. He smashed his first ball for 4 and then his 5th ball for six. Feeling sorry for the stick Nose was getting he ran him out for a scratchy 7.

Wickets tumbled, the noise level increased and Copdock had collapsed from 122-3 to 151 all out and looked in the Chantry park poo.

Andy, silver fox, Burch gave the boys a verbal kicking at tea as the team had underperformed again with the bat. I’d suggest that if the lower order actually practiced, it may help. Or at least mean 150’s become 180’s! That said the main responsibility falls with the top order. We had to bowl well to compete. At least we had a score to bowl at.

Deon took a wicket in the first over and both him and Nose started brightly. Nose then struck and Deon then removed another as IES were 16-3. A small partnership then blossomed and Eek turned to Chris Swallow, who already has 20 wickets this season. It was nice to see a proper spinner go to work on this track and he caused problems from the off.

Deon and Chris took regular wickets and IES’s batsman came and went. Deon removed Mendes with a ball that took a moon creator out of the pitch. “ If you choose to play here, you can’t complain “. And the win looked likely.

Little Bardo ended with 5-33 and Swallow with 3-9 from 8 overs. However they couldn’t finish things off and Eek turned to Jenko. It took the house wife’s favourite 5 balls and a great Baker catch to seal the win! 67 all out. A good, old fashioned hiding.

We’ve never done well at IES and now look forward to the return at Copdock.

The future’s bright, the future’s Copdock.
