Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won By 22 Runs

Match report
The U11 girls finally got their season underway with a 22 run victory away to Hadleigh. Both teams had players playing their first competitive game of cricket with our Copdock team including Amelia playing up an age group from the U9’s.

On a lovely morning for cricket and for spectators alike, Amalie captained the side and won the toss electing to field.

Megan was more than keen to open the bowling and lead by example conceding just three from the first over. This seemed to set the benchmark with Sophie taking the second over and not only conceding just three but also taking the first wicket. Amalie and Maddison finished off the bowling for the first Hadleigh pair who added 15 from these two overs to complete their partnership.

Charlotte and Annabel then shared two overs against the incoming pair, again conceding just 3 each from their respective overs. It was this consistent bowling from all the girls which would eventually restrict the Hadleigh total. Amelia was the last to take her first over before Megan finished off the second Hadleigh pair, the innings standing at 235 at the halfway point.

From this point the girls seemed inspired and the remaining Hadleigh pairs would go on to post just 19 runs from the remaining 8 overs. Not one of the girls conceded more than 6 runs from their second round of overs, quite amazing. Amelia took her first wicket in competitive cricket whilst Sophie picked up her second of the day to complete the innings.

So Hadleigh had set a target of 254 and with Maddison and Charlotte opening the batting the chase was on and it was evident these two didn’t want to hang around. Often calling runs before the ball had left the bat, the running between the wickets was impressive. Despite losing a couple of wickets in their time at the crease our two openers had put on 15 for the first partnership, a good start particularly as they had faced a very pacy and skilful opening bowler for Hadleigh.

The ‘A-Team’ then arrived as Copdock’s second pair as Annabel and Amelia took to the middle! There was some good competition between the opposition bowlers and this pair, with just one wicket falling and some good running once again, adding another solid 16 to the score.

So at the halfway point the game was very much in the balance, Copdock on 231 compared with Hadleigh on 235 at mid innings.

In came Megan and Sophie and they really pressed on the gas, lots of singles with the odd boundary mixed in, even with the loss of a wicket these two managed to post the highest partnership of the match of 26. A great effort.

So the match situation was such that going in to the final partnership, Amalie batting with Annabel who had been nominated to bat again, Copdock were two runs ahead. The equation was simple, don’t lose any wickets and the game was won, take the batting simple and see the game home.

That wasn’t the way Amalie wanted to do it, coming in and creaming her second ball for four, followed by a Hadleigh wicket next ball! And so the scoring continued, posting the second highest partnership of the match of 20, despite losing two more wickets in the last over.

With the match completed, the run push in the second half of the innings was the story of the day, Hadleigh managed 18 runs from their final 8 overs, Copdock scored 46 off theirs to record a 22 run victory.

Quite often at this level of cricket the number of wides and no balls bowled determines the result. If the consistency of the girls’ bowling of today continues together with the ‘powerplay’ batting of the final 8 overs, things will look very encouraging.

Well done girls!
