Match report A glorious summers day was the setting for a trip to the seaside venue of Brightlingsea for the seconds. Fresh off the back of a succession of close defeats a strong looking batting line up emerged at Brightlingsea keen to get a win under their belts. Having arrived to see a firm looking track, baking sunshine, shortish boundaries and a quick outfield the words 'bat first' were on everyones lips. Except perhaps Ironfists. A curious call of tails (never bet against the queen) meant Copdock were asked to field. The opening overs were certainly eventful, boundaries, an impressive Wooton stumping (celebrated with a few 'vapes') and a Harmison like opening from Sexton (thinking opening Ashes delivery, times two overs) meant that rates was rattling along. The introduction of East and Jenkins slowed the rate though wickets were difficult to come by. A mixture of solid good fortune, Reubens fielding and missed chances meant Brightlingsea were well set to post a testing target. Nel got some tap but picked up a few wickets and as is often the way Jenkin picked up a few tailenders to also finish with three wickets. In between the 'FIT' Adam Hopkins produced the highlight in the field with a direct hit run out.

A decent spread at tea (best of the year, remarked an increasingly rotund Sexton) was accompanied by confident chatter that the Brightlingsea total of 208 whilst being stiff was very gettable with the strength in depth present. A good start, based around some glorious Gravell strokeplay meant Copdock raced to 68 of 13 overs, Gravell with nearly all of the runs, though the circumspect Sharpe was also beginning to find his feet. When Gravell fell onto his sword in the 14th over the innings started to resemble the evening that Hugh Thomas was about to endure. Messy, at times embarrassing, at times entertaining, but ultimately one to forget. Rice went for 0, unable to hit ball with bat in his five deliveries. Nel lasted just one, though had he connected the ball would have reached Frinton (where Easts sat nat was still trying to direct everyone). Reuben and Hoppy soon joined the rest in the hutch, Sharpe for a well crafted 50 (made up off 3 daddy teens) and Hoppy for a duck. JP and Jenko got Flopdock back in with a sniff and then into a better place. With 56 needed off 11 overs and 5 wickets left Copdock were back in the game. Jenko's dismissal, Sextons departure soon after changed the course again into Brightlingseas favour. Wooton also didn't last long (though perhaps this was the longest he went all day without vaping) before Ironfist ran himself out. The last pair of JP and East were left with the unlikey task of 35 to get over 4 overs. Some decent strikes brought this to 16 off the last over but JP fell to the first ball attempting to find the boundary and Copdock fell short, again.

Again a game that could have finished in the win column slipped away. Reason to be encouraged by many elements of the day, but the winning habit eludes us at the moment.

Let's get it right next weekend.
