Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report
The Copdock win bus rolled into East Bergholt this weekend with much changed personnel. Following Ironfists assertion that Bank Holiday fixtures would continue to allow a week off during the season he neglected to consider that the play off game might be a good one to miss. This meant the G-String faced some difficulties assembling the eleven. Missing were such stalwarts as Sexton, Jenkin, Nel, Hopkins, Bhatt, Holland to name but a few though a return for Steve TomaGauke, Nick Meakin and Psycho Toby Allerton were good to see. Despite the fixture fiasco farce the passengers on the winbus were in good spirits, especially East still on a high from a midweek 'like' on social media from Jerv #lovejerv.

Keen to stamp out any signs of joviality Ironfist promptly lost the crucial toss and the seconds were inserted. The early cat and mouse about umpiring duties was settled as Max 'fell' off the swing and East escaped. The returning Archie Gravell and in form Run Out King Sharpe strode to the middle with purpose. Unfortunately things started badly with Gravell playing on in the fourth over and things never really recovered. Accurate, if unspectacular bowling made life difficult on a slow and low wicket, which combined with generously grassed outfield saw runs hard to come by. Soon a battle between overs bowled and runs scored began and when JP and Reubs fell in quick succession 35 for 3 off 19 overs suggested we were in some difficulties. Wickets continued to fall and though both Ethan Wright and Reg Hollis briefly threatened to brake the shackles nobody was able to take the innings by the scruff of the neck and wrestle the initiative Copdocks way. Some loose dismissals also didn't help and Nathan Phillpotts finished with 5 wickets as a Nick Meakin last ball six got Copdock to 129 for 9 of the full allotment of 45 overs.

Over a decent spread at tea there was perhaps a realisation that Copdock were behind the eight ball but a recognition that it would be possible to make life difficult for East Bergholt with some tight bowling and early wickets. The sight of Gravell taking the field in Roy Orbison sunglasses also lifting the spirits. Despite an early East breakthrough and two Gravell catches, one of them a magnificently athletic pluck (ironically off East, who last week couldn't catch a cold), East Bergholt were always in control and in truth eased to victory with 6 wickets and 9 overs to spare.

Our first loss in some time and Ironfist will be demanding more next week as we look to get the AA out and the Winbus back on the road.

Awards:

Tommy Cooper Blooper - Ironfist, fixture fiasco not forgotten, poor tossing.
Brian Lara Tiara - Gravell, what a grab.
