Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club Won

Match report Beautiful day, lovely ground and quality cricket, what more could you want other than the well deserved win that skipper Martyn Cull duly masterminded.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, COI got off to a brisk start with Hodge and Arch showing there would be no prizes for bowling short on this track, putting on 24 before Archie fell to the last ball of the 5th over. Matt Searle continued the theme with a quick fire 22 before being caught in the 14th over with the score on 65. The Quilibets skipper changed tack and brought his spinners on at this point and with some accurate bowling Hodgkinson and Meakin had to graft, putting on 122 for the third wicket before Meakin was caught on the mid wicket boundary as they started to push the score along. Wickets then fell regularly with some decent cameos most notably from Wilson who hit 37 of 25 balls. Unluckiest man of the day was James Hodgkinson who having gloved a ball for 4 that was given as byes was shortly afterwards caught at second slip for 99 from a ball that shot up off a length and onto his gloves, a magnificent knock and the first chance he had given. The Skipper closed the innings at 289 for 8.

COI started really well in the field, Pearson being caught magnificently by Archie Wilkinson as silly mid off from a full blooded drive only for no ball to be called because Pace had hit the stumps at the non strikers end during his delivery stride. This proved really expensive as Pearson went on to smash 139 in 39 overs.
Ricey started the second over with a full toss that Hughes contrived to edge onto his stumps to make up for the disappointment of the previous ball. He continued to take wickets, Taylor miscuing to Allen at mid on and Collet slashing at a wide one which somehow Meakin (belying his years) at second slip managed to jump high enough to parry upwards and a quick thinking Hodgkinson at 1st slip diving to catch the ball before it hit the ground. At the end of his first spell of 9 overs Ricey had 3 for 49.
Paddy meanwhile, not doing a lot wrong, took some punishment from Pearson his first 6 overs going for 62, while Pearsons partners found him almost unplayable. Paddy had the the last laugh in his sixth over when Pearson miscued and skied a shot aimed at cow corner to point, Wilson sprinting from behind the stumps to take a fine catch at point.

190 for 4 of which Pearson had scored 139.

100 to win, 6 wickets in hand, a road to bat on and some good batting to come, easy win.

Rice and Young had other ideas. Ably supported by some fine fielding and inspired captaincy (twice Dibsy moved a fielder only for that man to take a catch the next ball) they both took a wicket to take the score to 250 for 6.
This became 256 for 7 (Rice) 261 for 8 (Rice) 263 for 9 (Young) and 274 all out (Rice) Wilson picking up another 3 catches, for COI to win by 15 runs.

Man of the match Jonny Alfie Rice 18.1 overs, 3 maidens, 7 for 89.
